How the price is made up

There are two parts. First, a consultation with one of our consultant ophthalmologists (£260): a full eye examination, an assessment of the cataract and biometry, the measurements used to choose the power of your new lens. If surgery is right for you, the operation is priced per eye on top of that £260 consultation: from £2,995 with a standard monofocal lens, or from £3,500 with a premium lens. Each eye is priced separately, and the second eye can usually be treated two to four weeks after the first.

Monofocal or premium lens

A monofocal lens gives clear vision at one distance, so most people need reading glasses after surgery. Premium lenses, multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus, can reduce or remove the need for glasses, and toric lenses correct astigmatism. Your consultant explains which options suit your eyes at the consultation, before you decide.

What happens on the day

Cataract surgery is a day case under anaesthetic eye drops. The clouded lens is removed with ultrasound (phacoemulsification) and an artificial lens is put in through the same small incision. The operation takes 15 to 20 minutes per eye; allow two to three hours in total. You usually go home within one to two hours, with drops to use for four weeks.

Paying for surgery

Self-pay surgery is paid in full before your procedure. The cataract surgery page sets out the ways to spread the cost. If you have health insurance, check with your insurer before your consultation, as most need to authorise treatment first.
