About the procedure

What is cataract surgery?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens — the transparent structure behind the iris — that develops gradually and causes progressive loss of vision, glare, and difficulty with colour perception. Cataracts are the leading cause of treatable visual impairment worldwide and are primarily age-related, affecting most adults to some degree by their 70s.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed operations in medicine. The clouded natural lens is removed by phacoemulsification — ultrasound fragmentation — and replaced with a permanent, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes under topical (eye drop) anaesthesia as a day case. Vision improvement is typically immediate.

NHS waiting lists for cataract surgery in the West Midlands now exceed 12 months. At The Vesey you can be seen by a consultant ophthalmologist this week.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Ophthalmology consultant assessment

Full eye examination including visual acuity, slit-lamp assessment of the cataract, and biometry measurements to calculate the optimal power of the intraocular lens implant.

Preparation

Dilating eye drops and anaesthetic eye drops administered before surgery. No fasting required for topical anaesthesia.

Phacoemulsification

A small incision is made at the edge of the cornea. The cataract is removed using ultrasound (phacoemulsification). An artificial lens is implanted through the same incision. Takes 15–20 minutes.

Recovery

Discharged within 1–2 hours. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops for 4 weeks. Second eye can be treated 2–4 weeks after the first.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Vision improves within hours. Avoid swimming and heavy lifting for 2 weeks. Driving can typically be resumed within 1–2 weeks once both eyes are treated and vision meets legal requirements.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Cataract Surgery — frequently asked questions

How much does cataract surgery cost at The Vesey?
Cataract surgery at The Vesey is from £2,200 per eye, with standard monofocal lens implants. Premium lenses (multifocal or toric for astigmatism correction) are available at additional cost. An ophthalmology consultation costs from £260.
Will I still need glasses after cataract surgery?
With standard monofocal lenses, most patients need reading glasses after surgery. Premium multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses. Your consultant will discuss the options at your assessment.
How long does cataract surgery take?
The procedure itself takes 15–20 minutes per eye. With preparation and recovery, plan for approximately 2–3 hours at the clinic.
Is cataract surgery painful?
Cataract surgery is performed under topical anaesthesia (eye drops) and is not painful. You may be aware of light and movement but should not experience pain. Mild discomfort or grittiness for a few days after surgery is normal.
Do I need a GP referral for cataract surgery at The Vesey?
No — you can book an ophthalmology consultant directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
