What it is

Varicose veins affect around 1 in 4 UK adults. Beyond cosmetic concern, they cause aching, swelling, skin changes, eczema, ulceration and (rarely) superficial venous thrombosis. NICE recommends endothermal ablation as first-line treatment for symptomatic varicose veins.

Symptoms and signs

  • Visible bulging, tortuous leg veins.
  • Aching, heaviness, restlessness or itching in the legs — particularly at the end of the day.
  • Ankle swelling, eczema-like skin changes (varicose eczema) or brown discoloration (haemosiderin).
  • Healed or active venous leg ulcer.
  • Previous superficial venous thrombosis (phlebitis) along a varicose vein.

How we investigate

Duplex venous ultrasound performed by an accredited vascular sonographer — the diagnostic gold standard. Identifies the source of reflux (great saphenous, small saphenous, anterior accessory, perforator) which determines treatment.

Treatment options at The Vesey

  • Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) — walk-in walk-out, local anaesthetic only, day-case.
  • Radiofrequency ablation — equivalent to EVLA, technique-dependent choice.
  • VenaSeal glue closure — no tumescent anaesthesia required, fast recovery.
  • Foam sclerotherapy — for tributaries, recurrent disease, and selected smaller veins.
  • Compression therapy — for venous skin changes, ulcers and where intervention is deferred or declined.
