A health assessment isn't just a check-up. Done properly, it's a structured measurement of your current cardiovascular, metabolic and biochemical health — benchmarked against age-and-sex-matched norms, with clear recommendations to act on. At The Vesey, your assessment is carried out by our clinical team, reviewed by a consultant where indicated, and concluded with a written results report.

Our health assessments follow NICE guidance for cardiovascular risk assessment, the QRISK3 framework for 10-year cardiovascular risk, and current best practice for cancer screening, metabolic disease prevention and mental health screening. Reports are reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor.

What happens on the day

Allow the full appointment time — Essential 30 minutes, Advance 90 minutes, Executive 2 hours. Most patients leave knowing more about their own health than at any previous point in their adult life.

Prepare & complete forms

For Advance and Executive, fast for 8–10 hours beforehand (water only) for accurate lipid results — no fasting is needed for Essential. Complete a pre-visit health questionnaire we send by email, covering family history, medications and lifestyle.

On arrival
Consultation & baseline

Discussion with your clinician. BP, pulse, BMI, waist. Cardia cardiac screening. Resting ECG and fitness assessment (Advance/Executive).

During
Bloods drawn

A phlebotomist takes the blood panel. Results are processed and included in your written report.

After
Results & recommendations

You receive a written results report with clear, personalised recommendations and any next steps, sent to you securely once your results are back.

Why a structured health assessment beats "I'll go to the GP if something happens"

The NHS doesn't routinely screen adults under 40, and the NHS Health Check (40–74) is a 20-minute appointment that captures only the basics — and many practices haven't been able to offer it consistently since the pandemic.

A proper private health assessment changes three things:

  • Picks up silent disease earlier. Hypertension, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, hypercholesterolaemia and atrial fibrillation are all common conditions that develop quietly. Early identification matters — the difference between picking up an HbA1c of 47 (pre-diabetes, reversible with lifestyle) and a year later finding 62 (established type 2 diabetes, needing medication) is enormous.
  • Gives you a benchmark. Your blood pressure, lipid panel, fitness and bloods today, vs the same numbers in 12 months. The trend tells you whether your lifestyle is working.
  • Buys you dedicated time with a clinician. Time to actually talk through everything — stress, sleep, weight, alcohol, mental health, family history — that doesn't fit into a 10-minute NHS slot.

What we commonly find

In a typical month, our health assessments identify:

  • Previously undiagnosed hypertension in around 15% of over-40s
  • Raised HbA1c (pre-diabetes or diabetes) in around 12% of over-45s
  • Vitamin D deficiency in around 40% of patients (the West Midlands has below-average sunshine and high indoor working)
  • Iron deficiency in around 20% of pre-menopausal women
  • Subclinical hypothyroidism in around 5% of women over 35
  • Atrial fibrillation on ECG in 1–2% of over-65s
  • Mental health concerns warranting further assessment in around 18% of all comers

Most findings lead to lifestyle conversations and 12-month repeat testing, not medication. Where medication is appropriate, it's discussed openly with risks, benefits and alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private health assessment cost?

Three tiers: Essential £99, Advance £275, Executive £499. Each price is inclusive — consultation, all tests listed, written report and personalised recommendations. No hidden extras.

How long does it take?

Essential 30 minutes, Advance 90 minutes, Executive 2 hours. All conclude with a written results report and clear recommendations.

Do I need to fast?

For the Advance and Executive assessments, fast for 8–10 hours beforehand (water only) for accurate lipid results — morning appointments are usually easiest. The Essential assessment does not require fasting. Take routine medications as normal unless told otherwise.

What's the difference between Essential, Advance and Executive?

Essential covers core screening (HbA1c/lipids/FBC blood panel, BP, BMI, Cardia cardiac screening, mental health screen) with a Health Adviser — a clear baseline. Advance adds a resting ECG, the Randox Acute Med-1 extended blood panel, vitamin D, B12, ferritin and a fitness assessment, led by a GP. Executive adds the Randox Lifestyle comprehensive panel, urinalysis, hormone profiles, NT-proBNP, tumour markers and a consultant review of findings.

Can I have a health assessment on a Sunday?

Yes. Available 7 days a week including Sundays. Morning slots book first because of the fasting requirement, so book early.

What happens if you find something abnormal?

Discussed with you as soon as your results have been reviewed. The clinician recommends onward steps — further investigation, internal specialist referral within The Vesey, or NHS referral where appropriate. No additional charge for the conversation; only any subsequent tests or specialist appointments.

Will you write to my NHS GP?

Yes with your consent. The full report is shared with your NHS GP so your records stay joined-up — important if any subsequent NHS treatment is needed.

Can I gift a health assessment?

Yes. Health assessment vouchers are popular gifts, particularly for parents, partners and senior employees. Vouchers are valid 12 months from purchase. Contact us on 0121 387 3727 to arrange.

Are health assessments covered by health insurance?

Generally not — health insurance is usually for treatment of confirmed conditions rather than preventive screening. Some policies (particularly senior executive plans through Bupa/Vitality) include an annual health assessment allowance; check with your insurer.

What about corporate health screening for my company?

Yes — we offer dedicated corporate packages from £99 per employee, with on-site delivery options for larger groups. See our corporate health page or call our team.
