Urgent care vs A&E — what we can treat
The most important decision when something goes wrong is knowing where to go. Choosing the right setting gets you better care faster and avoids unnecessary delays.
When to call 999 or go to A&E
- Chest pain — especially central, crushing, radiating to arm or jaw, with sweating or breathlessness
- Stroke symptoms — face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty (FAST)
- Severe difficulty breathing — at rest, with blue lips, or rapidly worsening
- Unconsciousness or collapse
- Major trauma — significant head injury, suspected internal bleeding, serious road traffic accident
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) — throat swelling, difficulty breathing after allergen exposure
- Meningitis signs — severe headache, stiff neck, rash that does not fade under glass
Typical presentations we treat
UTIs, sinus infections, throat infections requiring antibiotic assessment, chest infections, ear infections, conjunctivitis, lacerations, ankle and wrist sprains, minor burns, insect bites, rashes, abdominal pain (non-surgical assessment), sudden worsening of a known chronic condition, medication issues, and results interpretation. Most patients are assessed and treated in under 30 minutes and leave with a clear plan, any required prescriptions, and referral if needed.
The Vesey does not replace NHS A&E for emergencies — it provides an alternative pathway for urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, with a named doctor rather than a rotating triage system.

Your medication list or a photo of your medicines. Any relevant previous letters or blood results. Photo ID. Health insurance details if you are claiming. No referral letter or GP registration required.
You are greeted and registered, then seen by a GMC-registered doctor. Assessment takes 20–30 minutes. Blood samples can be taken the same visit. Prescriptions are written on the day.
Referral letters written the same day where needed. Clinical summary sent to your GP with consent following your visit. Blood results communicated by phone or secure message as soon as available.

What minor injuries can you treat?
We treat lacerations (wound closure), sprains and strains, minor fractures (assessment and strapping), insect bites, burns, skin infections, eye injuries, and soft tissue injuries. For suspected significant fractures, major wounds, or injuries to the spine or chest, attend A&E or call 999.
Can you prescribe medications?
Yes. Our doctors can prescribe antibiotics, pain relief, short-term medication for acute conditions, and emergency supplies of existing medication. The prescription fee is £25 — collect from any pharmacy.
Does insurance cover urgent care?
Most major UK health insurers cover urgent GP and minor injury appointments. Pre-authorisation is not usually required for genuine urgent care, but check your policy. We provide itemised invoices for all insurance claims.
Can children be seen at urgent care?
Yes. We see children from age 1 upwards. For neonates or very young infants with urgent concerns, NHS paediatric A&E is more appropriate. For older children with acute illness, minor injury, or ear/throat infections, we can help.
Are you open out of hours?
We're open 7 days a week, with evening and weekend appointments — live availability is shown when you book online. Outside of appointment hours, contact NHS 111 for urgent medical advice, or 999 for emergencies.
Can you do blood tests on the same day?
Yes. We have on-site blood-test collection and results are provided once available for most common urgent blood tests including FBC, CRP, U&Es, LFTs, troponin, D-dimer, and pregnancy testing. Tests from £23 per panel.
When should I call 111 instead of coming to The Vesey?
Call 111 if you need telephone clinical advice and are uncertain whether your symptoms require in-person review. Come to The Vesey if you need a doctor to examine you, prescribe, treat a wound, or request blood tests — and your symptoms are not life-threatening. Call 999 for emergencies.
