What is the Alex 3 Allergy Explorer?

Alex 3 (Allergy Explorer 3) is the latest generation of molecular allergen component testing — the most detailed allergy investigation available from a single blood sample. Unlike a standard allergy panel that gives a simple positive or negative result per allergen, Alex 3 identifies the specific protein components within each allergen that you react to. This distinction is clinically significant: it tells us whether a peanut sensitisation carries genuine anaphylaxis risk, or is likely a harmless cross-reaction from birch pollen — a finding that changes management entirely.

What's included in your £500

  • Blood draw at The Vesey — a single venous sample, takes approximately 5 minutes. No fasting required.
  • Full Alex 3 laboratory analysis — 300+ individual allergen components tested, covering foods, pollens, pet dander, insect venoms, moulds, latex and selected drugs.
  • Written clinical report — a consultant-interpreted document listing every positive result, its clinical significance, and a personalised avoidance and management plan.
  • 30-minute result-interpretation appointment — included in the price. Our clinical team walks you through what your results mean and answers your questions. Remote or in-clinic, your choice.

Who is it for?

  • Unexplained allergic reactions — rashes, facial swelling, breathing symptoms — with no clear trigger.
  • Suspected food allergy across multiple foods, particularly nuts, seeds, shellfish, fruits and tree foods.
  • Children with multiple food allergies or unclear, overlapping sensitivities.
  • Hay fever or allergic rhinitis that isn't responding well to antihistamines or nasal sprays — Alex 3 identifies the true sensitising component and supports immunotherapy planning.
  • Previous anaphylaxis where the exact trigger has never been formally confirmed.
  • Pre-immunotherapy assessment — Alex 3 distinguishes genuine sensitisation from cross-reactivity so immunotherapy is targeted correctly.
  • Anyone who has had a commercial allergy panel and wants proper clinical interpretation of the results.

How it works — step by step

  1. Book online — no GP referral needed. Select your preferred date and time. Same-week appointments available, including Sundays.
  2. Attend for your blood draw — a single venous sample at The Vesey, Sutton Coldfield. Takes about 5 minutes. No fasting or preparation required.
  3. Laboratory analysis — your sample is processed at an accredited laboratory. Results are returned to us in 7–10 working days.
  4. Written report — we prepare a consultant-interpreted written report and send it directly to you.
  5. Interpretation appointment — your included 30-minute follow-up with our clinical team to go through the findings, ask questions, and agree a management plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly at The Vesey and we arrange everything. With your consent, we will write to your GP once your results are available so they have an up-to-date record.

Can the Alex 3 test be used for children?

Yes. The Alex 3 Allergy Explorer is suitable for all ages, including young children. The test requires only a small blood sample drawn by our experienced phlebotomy team. Our clinical staff are experienced in paediatric allergy interpretation and will frame results and recommendations appropriately.

What exactly does the £500 price include?

Everything: the blood draw at The Vesey, the full Alex 3 laboratory analysis (300+ allergen components), a written consultant-interpreted clinical report, and a 30-minute result-interpretation appointment with our clinical team. No hidden fees and no add-ons required.

How is Alex 3 different from tests I can buy online?

Commercial IgG "intolerance" panels (hair strand, finger-prick IgG food panels) have no clinical validity — they cannot diagnose allergy or predict reaction risk. Alex 3 uses accredited specific IgE laboratory methodology with component-resolved diagnostics: the same science used in specialist allergy centres, interpreted by a clinician rather than an algorithm.

What happens if my results show a positive sensitisation?

A positive result does not automatically mean you need to avoid a food or allergen. Component-resolved diagnostics tell us which results are clinically significant (requiring avoidance or immunotherapy) and which are cross-reactive but harmless. Your interpretation appointment covers exactly this — so you leave knowing precisely what to do, not just that a result was positive.

Will my health insurance cover the Alex 3 test?

BUPA, Vitality, AXA, WPA, Cigna, Aviva and Healix policies often cover allergy investigations when clinically indicated. Call us before booking — we can advise on whether pre-authorisation is needed and help you navigate your insurer's process. Self-pay is always accepted.
