From our consultant

"A patient who has been in pain for years, who can't sleep, can't walk to the shops, can't manage the stairs — and four weeks later is back walking around their garden. That's why we do this work, and it's why the waiting lists are the wrong place for many people to be stuck."

Mr Gunaratnam Shyamalan · Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Vesey

Joint replacement — what to expect, honestly

Total knee and hip replacement are two of the most life-changing operations in modern medicine. Outcomes data from the National Joint Registry shows:

  • 90%+ of patients report substantial pain relief at 1 year
  • 85%+ of joints still functioning well at 15 years
  • Complication rates (DVT, infection, revision surgery) are low — under 2% combined for healthy patients

That said, joint replacement is major surgery with real recovery time:

  • 1–3 nights in hospital (or day case for fit patients)
  • 2–6 weeks using crutches or a stick
  • 3 months to most daily activities
  • 12 months to maximum benefit

Surgery is rarely the first option. Conservative management — weight optimisation, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatories, intra-articular injections — should be exhausted first. Our consultants will tell you honestly when you are or aren't ready for surgery.

Sports injuries — when to see an orthopaedic surgeon

Most acute sports injuries — ankle sprains, muscle strains, mild knee pain — recover fully with rest, ice, compression and structured rehabilitation. Orthopaedic referral is warranted when:

  • Pain persists beyond 6 weeks despite physiotherapy
  • There's mechanical symptoms — true locking, giving way, catching
  • Swelling is recurrent or unexplained
  • There's loss of motion that isn't recovering
  • You're unable to return to your sport at any level

We work closely with sports physiotherapists and only operate when conservative management has been thoroughly trialled. Same-week MRI is available; many patients find that an MRI plus 30 minutes with a consultant resolves months of uncertainty.

Frequently asked questions

How much does private orthopaedic surgery cost?

Consultations from £260. Joint injection from £320. Knee arthroscopy from £4,200. Total knee or hip replacement from £14,500 inclusive — covering all pre-op assessments, surgery, anaesthetic, implants, hospital stay, and follow-up.

How quickly can I have joint replacement surgery?

Typically 4–6 weeks from consent. This includes pre-op assessment, anaesthetic review, anticoagulation planning and surgery date. Faster pathways possible for self-funded patients without complex co-morbidities.

Can I get an MRI without seeing the surgeon first?

Yes — we can arrange MRI on request with consultant review of the images. Most patients prefer to see the consultant first so the right imaging protocol is ordered. Same-week MRI typically available.

Will I be able to drive after surgery?

Knee replacement: typically 4–6 weeks for the left knee (automatic), 6–8 weeks for the right or manual. Hip replacement: 6 weeks. Shoulder surgery: variable depending on dominant arm and procedure. Your insurance must be informed.

What about robotic / computer-assisted surgery?

Computer navigation is used routinely. Robotic-assisted joint replacement (Mako, Robodoc) is available at selected partner facilities — call us for current availability and any cost difference.

Do you offer minimally invasive surgery?

Yes — keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery for knee, shoulder and ankle. Minimally invasive total hip and knee replacement techniques used where clinically appropriate.

How long until I can return to work?

Office work: 2–6 weeks depending on procedure. Manual labour: 8–12 weeks. Driving for work: 4–8 weeks. Most patients underestimate the recovery — we'll give you a realistic timeline at consultation.

Do you accept medical insurance?

Yes — all major insurers cover orthopaedic surgery. Pre-authorisation always required, particularly for joint replacement. We handle the paperwork; bring your authorisation code.

What about physiotherapy?

Essential to good outcomes. Our orthopaedic surgeons work with named physiotherapy partners; we coordinate referral and your physio sees the surgical notes. Some procedures include initial physiotherapy in the package; ongoing physio is typically charged separately.

Will the same surgeon operate?

Yes. The consultant who sees you at first consultation is the consultant who performs your surgery and follows you up. No registrar substitution.
