From our lead consultant

"Most patients I see have been worrying about a mole or a stubborn rash for months — often years — before they decide to come privately. The moment they realise they can be assessed, biopsied and reassured all in the same fortnight is genuinely transformative. We've built this service to make consultant dermatology the rule, not the exception."

Mole & skin cancer screening — what you need to know

The Midlands has the highest rate of late-stage melanoma diagnosis outside the South-West, according to Cancer Research UK regional data. Most melanomas are curable when caught early — the median 5-year survival is over 90% for stage I disease, falling below 30% for stage IV.

When to get a mole checked urgently

The classic ABCDE features are useful, but in our clinic the single most important sign is change — any mole that has visibly altered over weeks or months warrants a consultant opinion, regardless of how it looks. Specifically:

  • Asymmetry — one half doesn't mirror the other
  • Border — irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges
  • Colour — more than one shade of brown, black, red, blue or white
  • Diameter — greater than 6mm, though early melanomas can be smaller
  • Evolution — any change in size, shape, colour, elevation, or new symptoms (bleeding, itching, crusting)

A new firm pink or pearl-like lump that doesn't heal within 4–6 weeks may be a non-melanoma skin cancer (BCC or SCC) and also warrants assessment.

What dermoscopy adds over a naked-eye check

A dermatoscope is a hand-held magnifying device with polarised light that reveals structures below the surface of the skin — pigment networks, blood vessels, regression patterns — that aren't visible to the naked eye. In the hands of a trained consultant, dermoscopy roughly doubles the diagnostic accuracy for melanoma compared with naked-eye examination alone, and significantly reduces unnecessary excisions of benign lesions. Every consultation at The Vesey includes dermoscopy as standard.

Acne in adults — when to see a dermatologist

Acne affects around 30–40% of women between 25 and 50, often appearing for the first time in the third decade. GP treatment with topicals and oral antibiotics resolves the majority of cases, but you should consider a private dermatology consultation if:

  • You've had 6+ months of GP-prescribed treatment without satisfactory improvement
  • You have scarring or pigmentation developing alongside active acne
  • You're considering isotretinoin (Roaccutane) — this is a consultant-only prescription in the UK
  • You're planning pregnancy or have stopped hormonal contraception
  • Acne is affecting your sleep, work or mental health

Our consultants prescribe and monitor isotretinoin to General Medical Council guidance, including monthly blood tests, pregnancy prevention counselling, and mental health screening at each visit. The full programme — initial consult, four monitoring visits and end-of-course review — is £950 inclusive.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private dermatologist cost in Sutton Coldfield?

An initial consultant dermatology appointment at The Vesey costs £260, including up to 30 minutes with the consultant and a full skin examination using dermoscopy where indicated. Follow-up appointments are £180. Procedures such as mole removal (£450) or cryotherapy (£160) are quoted separately and confirmed before any work is done.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly. If you do have a referral letter or relevant photographs, please bring them — they help the consultant prepare. With your consent, we can also write to your NHS GP after your appointment for continuity of care.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most patients are seen within 7–14 days. Concerning moles, suspected skin cancer, or rapidly changing lesions are prioritised and can often be seen within 3–5 days. Call 0121 387 3727 or WhatsApp 07498 067215 if your concern is urgent.

What happens during a full-body mole check?

A full-body mole check takes around 30 minutes. The consultant examines all visible skin, photographs concerning lesions, and uses a hand-held dermatoscope to assess pigmentation pattern. You receive a clear plan: reassurance, photographic surveillance, or removal and biopsy if indicated.

Can I have a mole removed on the same day?

For benign-appearing lesions, same-day removal under local anaesthetic is often possible after consent. Lesions suspicious for skin cancer are removed in a planned procedure session, typically within 1–2 weeks, to ensure adequate margins and full histopathology. All removed tissue is sent to an accredited NHS laboratory.

Do you treat acne in adults?

Yes. We treat acne across the full spectrum: comedonal, inflammatory, cystic, hormonal, and acne in skin of colour. Treatment options include prescription topicals, oral antibiotics, hormonal therapy (including spironolactone for adult women), and consultant-prescribed isotretinoin with full monitoring. We also assess and treat acne scarring.

Does The Vesey accept private medical insurance?

Yes. We are recognised by Bupa, Vitality, AXA Health, Aviva, WPA, Healix and other major UK insurers. Please bring your authorisation code. If you're unsure whether your policy covers dermatology, call our team — we'll confirm in minutes.

Do you offer paediatric dermatology?

Yes. Our consultants assess and treat children of all ages, including infants, for eczema, viral warts, molluscum, naevi, birthmarks, and skin infections. Where intervention is needed in very young children, we coordinate with our paediatric consultant team.

Is dermoscopy / mole mapping available?

Yes. All our consultants use hand-held dermoscopy as standard. For patients with multiple atypical naevi or a personal/family history of melanoma, structured photographic mole mapping is available on request and may be repeated 6–12 monthly for surveillance.

Where can I park, and is the clinic accessible?

Free on-site parking is available directly outside the clinic at Unit 3, The Courtyard, Sutton Coldfield B75 7BU. All consulting rooms are on the ground floor with step-free wheelchair access and an accessible WC. Complimentary tea and coffee are available in the waiting area.
