Which heart monitor do I need?
There is one rule that decides this, and it is simpler than most people expect: a monitor can only record a rhythm that happens while it is switched on. So the recording length should be matched to how often your symptoms actually occur — not to the price. A 24-hour Holter is excellent value if your palpitations happen every day, and a waste of £250 if they happen once a fortnight.

If your symptoms are rarer than once a fortnight, even a 14-day recording may not catch them — in that case an implantable loop recorder is usually the right answer, and our consultant cardiologists can arrange one. The Zio heart monitor — £700
Zio is a wire-free ECG patch made by iRhythm Technologies. Instead of a recorder clipped to your waistband with leads running to electrodes on your chest, Zio is a single adhesive patch about the size of a plaster, applied to the left side of the chest. There is nothing to carry, nothing to unplug, and no wires under your clothing.
The practical difference matters most on long recordings. A wired Holter worn for 7 or 14 days means a fortnight of strip washes, electrodes that lift, and a recorder to keep track of. Zio is water-resistant, so you shower as normal, and it is designed to stay on and record continuously for up to 14 days. For patients who found a previous long recording difficult — or who simply won't tolerate two weeks of wires — it is usually the better answer.

How it works, step by step
Four steps from your first call to a written report. Most patients are fitted within 7 days.
We ask how often your symptoms happen and recommend the right recording length, then book your fitting slot.
Electrodes on the chest, or a cuff on the upper arm. We start the recorder and give you a symptom diary.
Work, exercise and sleep as usual. Note the time of any symptoms — that is what the physiologist matches the trace against.
Bring the device back. A cardiac physiologist analyses and reports the recording; significant findings are escalated sooner.
Wearing the monitor — the practical bits
- Washing. A wired Holter recorder, its electrodes and the BP cuff must stay dry — no showering, bathing or swimming while one is on. A strip wash is fine. If that is the sticking point on a longer recording, say so when you call: the Zio patch is water-resistant and you shower as normal.
- Clothing. Wear a loose two-piece outfit to your fitting appointment. The monitor sits under clothing and is not visible to other people.
- Exercise. Carry on. If exertion is what triggers your symptoms, we specifically want the recording to capture it.
- Sleep. Sleep normally. Overnight data matters — nocturnal blood pressure dipping and night-time pauses are among the most useful findings.
- Skin. Electrodes occasionally irritate the skin. Tell us at fitting if you have a known adhesive allergy or sensitive skin, and we will use alternative electrodes.
- Your diary. Write the time and a few words for every symptom. A trace with a matching diary entry is worth far more than a trace on its own.
- Devices and travel. Mobile phones and normal household electronics do not interfere with the recording. Tell us in advance if you have a pacemaker or ICD, or if you are flying during the recording period.

What is a Holter monitor?
A Holter monitor is a small, lightweight ECG recorder worn on the body with adhesive electrodes on the chest. It records every heartbeat continuously for the whole recording period, so intermittent rhythm changes that a 10-second resting ECG in clinic would miss can be captured while you go about normal life.
What is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)?
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses a cuff on the upper arm that inflates automatically through the day and overnight. It gives a daytime average, a night-time average and your nocturnal dipping pattern. It is the recommended way to confirm or rule out hypertension, and to identify white-coat hypertension, where readings are raised in clinic but normal in daily life.
How quickly can I be fitted with a heart monitor?
Most patients are fitted within 7 days of calling, and often in the same week. We are open 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, at Sutton Coldfield B75 7BU, with free on-site parking.
Can I shower or bathe while wearing a heart monitor?
It depends which monitor you have. Wired Holter recorders, their electrodes and blood pressure cuffs must be kept dry, so no showering, bathing or swimming while one is on — a strip wash is fine. The Zio patch is different: it is water-resistant, so you shower as normal for the whole recording. If washing is your concern on a 7-day or 14-day recording, tell us when you call and we will talk through Zio.
Can I exercise, work and sleep normally with the monitor on?
Yes, and you should. The point of ambulatory monitoring is to record your heart during your normal life, including work, exercise and sleep. Carrying on as usual makes it far more likely the recording captures the symptom you came in about.
How long do heart monitor results take?
Once the monitor is returned, the recording is analysed and reported by a cardiac physiologist. The written report is typically available within 5 to 7 working days. Findings that need faster action are escalated to a clinician straight away rather than waiting for the routine report.
Is fitting, removal and the report included in the price?
Yes. Every rate on this page is inclusive of fitting the monitor, removing it, and the analysis and written report by a cardiac physiologist. There are no separate fitting, removal or reporting fees.
Will you send the results to my GP?
Yes, with your consent, we send the report to your NHS GP. You also receive your own copy. If the findings need specialist input, we can arrange a consultant cardiology appointment at The Vesey.
Does private health insurance cover heart monitoring?
Bupa, Vitality, AXA Health, Aviva, WPA and Healix routinely cover ambulatory ECG and blood pressure monitoring. Insurers generally require pre-authorisation and a referral from a consultant, so check your policy and get an authorisation code before your fitting appointment.

Should I have a Zio patch or a standard Holter monitor?
For short recordings of 24 to 72 hours a standard Holter is usually the better value at £250 to £350. Zio at £700 comes into its own on longer recordings, where being able to shower and having no wires makes a fortnight of monitoring realistic rather than an ordeal. Call us and we will tell you honestly which suits your symptoms and budget.
Do I need to see a cardiologist before having a heart monitor?
Not necessarily. Heart monitoring can be arranged on its own. Many patients do combine it with a consultant cardiology consultation at The Vesey, from £300, so that the result is interpreted alongside a full history, examination, ECG and echocardiogram where indicated.
