What it is

Most modern gynaecological surgery is laparoscopic by default. Typical operations include diagnostic laparoscopy, ovarian cystectomy, salpingectomy, treatment of endometriosis, myomectomy and total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Length of stay is usually 0-1 night; most patients are back to office work within 1-2 weeks.

When this is relevant

  • Suspected endometriosis - diagnostic laparoscopy with excision in the same operation.
  • Symptomatic ovarian cysts not resolving with watchful waiting.
  • Fibroids requiring myomectomy with fertility preservation.
  • Permanent contraception (bilateral salpingectomy).
  • Hysterectomy where vaginal route is unsuitable.
  • Persistent pelvic pain where a structural cause is suspected and not yet identified.

How we investigate

Detailed consultation, pelvic ultrasound, MRI pelvis where deep endometriosis or complex anatomy is suspected, pre-operative bloods and anaesthetic review.

Options at The Vesey

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy with treatment - assessment plus excision of disease in one operation.
  • Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy - preserves ovarian tissue for benign cysts.
  • Laparoscopic endometriosis excision - by an accredited deep-endometriosis surgeon where indicated.
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy - fibroid removal preserving the womb.
  • Total laparoscopic hysterectomy - day-case or one-night stay; ovaries usually preserved.
  • Adhesiolysis - division of post-surgical or endometriosis adhesions.
How is laparoscopic surgery different from open surgery? +

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery uses 3–5 small cuts (5–10 mm) and a camera instead of a single large incision. Blood loss is less, post-operative pain is lower, hospital stay is shorter (usually 0–1 night), and recovery is typically 1–2 weeks rather than 4–6.

Will laparoscopic surgery leave scars? +

Small scars (3–5 mm) at each port site — typically hidden in or below the navel and in the pubic hairline. They fade significantly over 6–12 months and are rarely visible.

What are the risks of laparoscopic gynaecological surgery? +

Overall serious complication rates are low (<1%). Recognised risks include damage to bladder, bowel or blood vessels (rare), infection, bleeding, deep vein thrombosis and anaesthetic reactions. Your consultant will discuss the specific risks relevant to your planned procedure at the pre-operative consultation.

When can I return to normal activities? +

Office work: 1–2 weeks. Driving: when you can perform an emergency stop comfortably — usually 2–3 weeks. Gym or heavy lifting: 6 weeks. Sexual intercourse: usually 4–6 weeks after the procedure.
