About the procedure

What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a detailed examination of the cervix using a specially designed microscope (colposcope) that magnifies the cervical tissue and allows the gynaecologist to identify abnormal cells that may require treatment or closer monitoring. It is the standard follow-up investigation when a cervical screening test (smear test) returns an abnormal result or when HPV is detected.

During the examination, acetic acid and iodine solutions are applied to the cervix to highlight abnormal areas. Biopsies may be taken from suspicious areas for laboratory analysis. The procedure is similar to a smear test and takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

An abnormal smear result causes significant anxiety. At The Vesey you can be seen within days rather than the NHS standard 4–8 week wait.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Your consultant reviews your smear results, HPV test, and any previous colposcopy findings before proceeding.

Colposcopy examination

The procedure is similar to a smear test. Solutions are applied to the cervix. The colposcope (a camera outside the body) magnifies and illuminates the cervical tissue for detailed examination.

Biopsy (if required)

If abnormal areas are identified, a small biopsy is taken. This causes a brief pinching sensation. Results are available within 1–2 weeks.

Follow-up

Your consultant will discuss findings immediately and advise on next steps — surveillance, treatment, or discharge.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

No recovery time required. Some spotting and discharge for a few days after biopsy is normal. Avoid tampons, swimming and sexual intercourse for a week after biopsy.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

NHS vs Private

Why patients are choosing private Colposcopy

NHS waiting lists for colposcopy in the West Midlands currently exceed 4–8 weeks (but anxiety is immediate). At The Vesey, you can be seen by a consultant this week.

Your questions answered

Colposcopy — frequently asked questions

How quickly can I be seen for colposcopy at The Vesey?
We understand the anxiety of an abnormal smear result. We aim to offer appointments within 3–5 days of contacting us. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
How much does private colposcopy cost at The Vesey?
Colposcopy at The Vesey costs from £650. A consultant gynaecology assessment costs from £260. The colposcopy procedure may be combined with the consultation appointment.
Is colposcopy painful?
Colposcopy is similar in sensation to a cervical smear. Most women find it uncomfortable rather than painful. If a biopsy is taken, there is a brief sharp sensation. Ibuprofen taken beforehand is helpful.
What do colposcopy results mean?
Your consultant will explain your biopsy results in detail. Results are graded on the degree of abnormality (CIN 1, 2 or 3). Your consultant will advise whether treatment, repeat colposcopy, or return to routine screening is recommended.
Does a positive HPV test mean I have cancer?
No. A positive HPV test means you have been infected with a high-risk strain of HPV. Most HPV infections clear on their own. Colposcopy allows early identification of any pre-cancerous changes before they progress, which is why it is so important.
