About the procedure

What is fibroid removal (myomectomy)?

Fibroids (uterine leiomyomas) are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are extremely common, affecting approximately 70% of women by age 50, though many cause no symptoms. When fibroids do cause problems — heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, or fertility difficulties — treatment may be required.

Myomectomy is the surgical removal of fibroids whilst preserving the uterus, making it the preferred surgical option for women who wish to maintain fertility or who wish to keep their uterus. The procedure can be performed laparoscopically (keyhole), hysteroscopically (through the cervix for submucosal fibroids), or via open surgery depending on the size, number and position of the fibroids.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Review of ultrasound or MRI findings, assessment of fibroid size, number and position, and a discussion of surgical approach options.

Pre-operative assessment

Blood tests (fibroids commonly cause anaemia), ECG, anaesthetic review. Iron supplementation may be recommended before surgery.

Myomectomy

The surgical approach depends on fibroid characteristics. Laparoscopic myomectomy uses small incisions and has a faster recovery. Open myomectomy is preferred for large or numerous fibroids.

Recovery

Laparoscopic: 2–4 weeks recovery. Open: 4–6 weeks recovery. Uterine healing takes 3–6 months before attempting pregnancy.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Laparoscopic myomectomy: hospital 1–2 nights, return to work 2–3 weeks. Open myomectomy: hospital 2–4 nights, return to work 4–6 weeks.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Fibroid Removal (Myomectomy) — frequently asked questions

Will fibroids come back after myomectomy?
Fibroids can recur after myomectomy, particularly in women under 40. Recurrence rates vary by surgical approach and completeness of removal. Your consultant will discuss recurrence risk at your appointment.
How much does fibroid removal cost at The Vesey?
Myomectomy at The Vesey is from £4,500. Exact cost depends on the surgical approach required. A consultant assessment costs from £260.
Can I get pregnant after fibroid removal?
Yes — preserving fertility is one of the main reasons for myomectomy over hysterectomy. Most women can attempt pregnancy 3–6 months after surgery once the uterus has healed. Your consultant will advise on the optimal timing.
Is laparoscopic myomectomy better than open surgery?
Laparoscopic myomectomy has faster recovery and fewer complications for suitable cases. However, for large or numerous fibroids, open surgery may be necessary. Your consultant will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your fibroid characteristics.
Do I need a GP referral for fibroid treatment at The Vesey?
No — you can book a consultant gynaecologist directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
