What is hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a gynaecologist to examine the inside of the uterus (womb) using a thin, lighted telescope called a hysteroscope, which is passed through the vagina and cervix. It can be both diagnostic — examining the uterine cavity for abnormalities — and operative, treating conditions such as polyps or fibroids during the same procedure.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is typically performed under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Operative hysteroscopy, which involves treating conditions found during examination, usually requires a short general anaesthetic. The procedure is the gold standard investigation for abnormal uterine bleeding and is preferred over blind biopsy techniques because it allows direct visualisation.

  • Suspected uterine polyps or fibroids identified on ultrasound
  • Unexplained infertility or recurrent miscarriage
  • Removal of a retained intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Investigation of an abnormal uterine cavity finding on scan

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Your consultant gynaecologist reviews your symptoms, examination findings and any ultrasound results, and will discuss the planned approach and what the hysteroscopy aims to find or treat.

Pre-procedure preparation

For outpatient procedures, a mild pain reliever beforehand is often recommended. For operative hysteroscopy under general anaesthesia, pre-operative fasting applies.

Hysteroscopy

The hysteroscope is gently passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity. The cavity is expanded with saline to improve visualisation. The surgeon examines all surfaces and treats any lesions found.

Recovery

Outpatient hysteroscopy: discharged within 1–2 hours with mild period-type cramping. General anaesthetic cases: 2–4 hours recovery before discharge.

Recovery — what to expect

Some cramping and light spotting for a few days is normal. Return to work usually within 1–2 days for diagnostic procedures, or 3–5 days after operative hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
