About the procedure

What is intravitreal injection?

Intravitreal injections are administered directly into the vitreous cavity of the eye to deliver medication to the retina at therapeutic concentrations. The most common medications used are anti-VEGF drugs — including ranibizumab (Lucentis), bevacizumab (Avastin), aflibercept (Eylea), and faricimab (Vabysmo) — which treat conditions caused by abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage.

Intravitreal injections are the mainstay of treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular oedema (DMO), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia (eye drops and a small injection).

When these conditions are active, vision can deteriorate rapidly. Timely treatment is critical — delays can result in permanent vision loss.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Urgent ophthalmology assessment

OCT scan of the macula to assess retinal anatomy and disease activity. Confirmation of diagnosis and urgency of treatment.

Preparation

Povidone-iodine antiseptic drops. Anaesthetic eye drops and a small local anaesthetic injection if required.

Intravitreal injection

Under sterile conditions, a fine needle is inserted through the white of the eye (sclera) into the vitreous cavity. The medication is injected. Takes approximately 5 minutes. A small speculum keeps the eye open.

Post-treatment

Antibiotic drops for several days. Follow-up OCT scan at 4–8 weeks to assess treatment response.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

No recovery time required. Some mild discomfort and blurred vision for 24 hours. Driving should not be attempted on the day of the injection.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
