What is knee arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a small camera (arthroscope) is inserted into the knee joint through a small incision, allowing the surgeon to examine the internal structures of the knee in detail. The procedure can be both diagnostic — confirming what is causing your knee pain — and therapeutic, with the surgeon able to repair or remove damaged tissue during the same operation.
Common conditions treated include meniscal tears, loose bodies (fragments of bone or cartilage), damaged articular cartilage, and inflamed synovial tissue. The procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia and typically takes 30–60 minutes.

What happens at The Vesey
From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.
Consultant assessment
Your orthopaedic surgeon reviews your history, examines your knee and reviews imaging. Together you will discuss whether arthroscopy is appropriate and what the procedure is likely to find and treat.
Pre-operative assessment
A routine health check is completed before surgery. You will be asked to fast for 6 hours before the procedure.
Arthroscopy
Two small incisions are made around the knee. The arthroscope and surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon examines all knee structures and carries out any necessary repair or debridement.
Recovery
You will rest in recovery for 1–2 hours before discharge. Physiotherapy begins within days of surgery.
Recovery — what to expect
Most patients go home the same day. Crutches may be needed for a few days. Return to light activity within 1–2 weeks, and most patients return to sport within 6–8 weeks depending on what was treated.
Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
