About the procedure

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a small camera is inserted through a tiny incision near the navel, allowing the gynaecologist to visualise the pelvic organs directly. It is the definitive investigation for conditions including endometriosis and pelvic adhesions — conditions that are invisible on ultrasound and MRI.

Beyond diagnosis, the same laparoscopic approach can be used to treat conditions found during the procedure — removing endometrial deposits, draining or removing ovarian cysts, and dividing adhesions. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 30–60 minutes for diagnostic purposes, longer if extensive treatment is required.

Am I a candidate?

Who is laparoscopy for?

You may be a suitable candidate for laparoscopy if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Chronic pelvic pain, particularly cyclical pain worsening around menstruation
  • Suspected endometriosis not confirmed by imaging
  • Infertility investigation — to assess tubal patency and pelvic anatomy
  • Ovarian cysts requiring assessment or removal
  • Pelvic adhesions causing pain or fertility problems

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Review of your history, examination, and any imaging results. Your consultant will discuss whether laparoscopy is the most appropriate next step and what it aims to find or treat.

Pre-operative assessment

Blood tests, ECG if needed, and anaesthetic review.

Laparoscopy

Under general anaesthesia, carbon dioxide gas is introduced to inflate the abdomen. The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision and the pelvis is systematically examined. Treatment is performed through additional small incisions if required.

Recovery

Patients are typically discharged the same day or after one night. Shoulder tip pain from the gas usually resolves within 48 hours.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Most patients return to light activities within 3–5 days and normal activities within 1–2 weeks. Return to work depends on the procedure performed and the nature of the job.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Laparoscopy — frequently asked questions

Can laparoscopy diagnose endometriosis?
Yes. Laparoscopy is the only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis. Endometrial deposits are not reliably visible on ultrasound or MRI, and a negative scan does not rule out the diagnosis.
How much does laparoscopy cost at The Vesey?
Diagnostic laparoscopy is from £2,800. Operative laparoscopy costs depend on what treatment is performed. A consultant assessment costs from £260.
Is laparoscopy the same as keyhole surgery?
Yes — laparoscopy and keyhole surgery refer to the same minimally invasive approach using a camera introduced through small incisions.
How long does recovery from laparoscopy take?
Most patients return to desk work within 5–7 days and to more physical activity within 2 weeks. Recovery time depends on whether treatment was performed during the procedure.
Do I need a GP referral for laparoscopy at The Vesey?
No — you can book a consultant gynaecologist directly without a referral. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
