About the procedure

What is partial knee replacement?

A partial knee replacement (unicompartmental arthroplasty) replaces only the damaged compartment of the knee rather than the entire joint. It is suitable when arthritis is confined to one compartment — typically the inner (medial) side — and the ligaments and remaining cartilage are in good condition.

Compared to total knee replacement, partial replacement is a smaller operation with less bone removal, faster recovery, and — in appropriate patients — better functional outcomes. The procedure takes approximately 60 minutes and is performed through a smaller incision than total knee replacement.

Am I a candidate?

Who is partial knee replacement for?

You may be a suitable candidate for partial knee replacement if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Osteoarthritis confined to one compartment of the knee
  • Intact cruciate ligaments and healthy cartilage in other compartments
  • Significant knee pain affecting daily life
  • Failure of conservative management
  • Patients seeking faster recovery than total knee replacement offers

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Your consultant reviews weight-bearing X-rays and MRI to confirm whether the arthritis is genuinely unicompartmental and whether your ligaments are suitable for partial replacement.

Pre-operative assessment

Full pre-operative workup including blood tests and anaesthetic assessment.

Partial replacement

A smaller incision than total knee replacement. Only the damaged compartment surfaces are replaced with metal and polyethylene components.

Rehabilitation

Recovery is faster than total knee replacement. Physiotherapy begins within 24 hours and most patients regain excellent function within 6–8 weeks.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Most patients are discharged after 1–2 nights. Walking unaided often possible at 2–4 weeks. Return to driving at 4–6 weeks and most activities at 6–8 weeks.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Partial Knee Replacement — frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for partial rather than total knee replacement?
Suitability depends on the pattern of arthritis and ligament integrity, confirmed by weight-bearing X-rays and MRI. Your consultant will advise at your assessment appointment.
How much does partial knee replacement cost at The Vesey?
Partial knee replacement at The Vesey is from £9,500. A consultant assessment costs from £260.
Is partial knee replacement less risky than total knee replacement?
Partial replacement involves less bone removal and is a shorter operation, which generally means a smaller surgical risk. However, all joint replacement surgery carries risks which your surgeon will discuss with you.
Can partial knee replacement be converted to total knee replacement later?
Yes. If a partial replacement fails or the arthritis progresses to other compartments, conversion to total knee replacement is possible.
How long does partial knee replacement last?
Studies show partial knee replacements have similar long-term survival to total knee replacements in appropriately selected patients — typically 15–20 years.
