Check the foundations of your bone health

Bone is living tissue, constantly rebuilt — and that process depends on vitamin D, calcium and the hormones that regulate them. This panel checks them together so a clinician can help identify or rule out the deficiencies and imbalances that weaken bone. £181 · clinician-reviewed results · CQC-regulated.

Who it's for

Looking after your bones, before a fracture

Osteoporosis affects an estimated 3.5 million people in the UK, and vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency. Many of the causes show up in a simple blood test. This panel is a sensible first step if you recognise any of these.

Post-menopausal women

Falling oestrogen after menopause accelerates bone loss and raises fracture risk.

On long-term steroids

Corticosteroid therapy is a leading cause of secondary bone thinning.

Limited sun exposure

Covering clothing, indoor lifestyles or darker skin all reduce vitamin D production.

Malabsorption

Coeliac disease, IBD or bariatric surgery can leave calcium and vitamin D low.

Men over 60

Osteoporosis in men is under-recognised but clinically important.

Aching bones or muscles

Persistent bone or muscle aches that you'd like investigated properly.

What we check

6 markers across 4 areas

This panel screens the markers most relevant to bone strength — in a single blood draw.

Vitamin D

The UK's most common nutritional deficiency — vital for absorbing calcium and mineralising bone.

1 marker

Calcium & phosphate

Adjusted calcium and phosphate show how well the minerals that build bone are balanced.

2 markers

Bone turnover

Alkaline phosphatase reflects the activity of bone-building cells and can flag Paget's disease.

1 marker

Parathyroid & magnesium

PTH and magnesium reveal the hormonal control of calcium and bone resorption.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

Parathyroid & magnesium

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)Magnesium

A metabolic bone panel measuring vitamin D (25-OH), adjusted calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone and magnesium. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis or a DEXA bone-density scan — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

Can a blood test diagnose osteoporosis?
Not on its own — osteoporosis is diagnosed with a DEXA bone-density scan. What this blood panel can do is help identify or rule out the treatable factors that affect bone strength, such as vitamin D deficiency, calcium imbalance and parathyroid problems. A clinician reviews your results and advises whether a DEXA scan or other steps would be sensible.
Do I need to fast before this blood test?
No fasting is needed for the bone health panel. If you take vitamin D, calcium or magnesium supplements, mention this when you book, as it can affect interpretation.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains anything outside the normal range and the sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
Who should consider this test?
It's commonly chosen by post-menopausal women, men over 60, people on long-term steroids, those with limited sun exposure, and anyone with malabsorption or persistent bone and muscle aches. A clinician reviews every result and explains what it means for you.

Understanding your Bone Health results

Each result in your Bone Health is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Vitamin D (25-OH)

Essential for calcium absorption. Deficiency accelerates bone loss and increases fracture risk.

Calcium (Corrected)

Corrected for albumin level. Abnormal calcium — high or low — may indicate parathyroid disease, malignancy, or vitamin D deficiency.

PTH (Parathyroid Hormone)

Regulates calcium and phosphate balance. Elevated PTH (hyperparathyroidism) is a common cause of osteoporosis and kidney stones.

Phosphate

Works alongside calcium in bone mineralisation; low phosphate can impair bone formation.

Alkaline Phosphatase

Enzyme present in bone and liver; elevated levels may indicate increased bone turnover or Paget's disease.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
