A more accurate measure of kidney function

By adding cystatin C — a marker of kidney function that isn't affected by muscle mass — to a full electrolyte and kidney panel, this 12-marker screen can give a more accurate picture than creatinine alone. A clinician reviews every result. £159 · clinician-reviewed results · CQC-regulated.

Who it's for

When kidney function needs a closer look

Standard creatinine-based estimates can be misleading in some people. This extended panel is a sensible first step if you recognise any of these.

Known or suspected CKD

Wanting more accurate monitoring of chronic kidney disease.

Older adults

Creatinine-based eGFR can overestimate kidney function in older people.

Low muscle mass

In those who are slight, frail or have wasting conditions, cystatin C is more reliable.

On certain medications

Some drugs need dose adjustment based on accurate kidney function.

High blood pressure or diabetes

Conditions that can affect the kidneys over time and warrant monitoring.

A fuller assessment

You want a more comprehensive kidney check than the standard panel.

What we check

12 markers across 4 areas

This panel screens filtration, electrolytes and metabolic markers together — for a fuller view of kidney health in one blood draw.

Filtration markers

Creatinine, urea and eGFR give the standard measure of how well the kidneys filter.

3 markers

Cystatin C

A muscle-independent marker that can reveal early kidney decline standard tests miss.

1 marker

Electrolytes

Sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate and magnesium reflect the kidneys' balancing role.

6 markers

Uric acid

Elevated uric acid links kidney function with gout and metabolic risk.

An extended kidney panel including all standard kidney markers plus cystatin C — a low-molecular-weight protein filtered freely at the glomerulus, independent of muscle mass, providing a superior endogenous marker of GFR — alongside electrolytes, minerals, albumin and uric acid. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

How is this different from the standard Kidney Health test?
This extended panel adds cystatin C and uric acid to the standard kidney markers. Cystatin C is a measure of kidney function that isn't affected by muscle mass, so it can give a more accurate result than creatinine alone — particularly in older adults or people with low muscle mass. A clinician reviews every result.
What is cystatin C and why does it matter?
Cystatin C is a small protein filtered freely by the kidneys. Because its level doesn't depend on muscle mass the way creatinine does, it can reveal early changes in kidney function that standard creatinine-based eGFR may miss — useful in the elderly, the very slim, or those with wasting conditions.
Do I need to fast before this blood test?
No fasting is generally required for the extended kidney panel. Staying well hydrated and avoiding very heavy exercise the day before can help give a representative result.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains anything outside the normal range with clear guidance.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Understanding your Extended Kidney Health results

Each result in your Extended Kidney Health is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Key Biomarkers

This panel assesses the key markers relevant to extended kidney health. Each result is reviewed by a clinician who will flag any values outside the expected range for your age and sex.

Reference Ranges

Reference intervals are population-derived and should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical history — a result within range does not always exclude pathology, and a mildly out-of-range result may be clinically insignificant in isolation.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
