What is cortisone joint injection?
Cortisone (corticosteroid) injection is a well-established treatment for joint and soft tissue inflammation causing pain, stiffness, and restricted movement. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication that, when injected directly into the affected joint or tissue, reduces local inflammation and provides significant pain relief.
Injections are commonly performed for osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle and small joints; tendinopathy; bursitis; and inflammatory arthritis flares. The injection is usually guided by ultrasound at The Vesey to ensure precise placement and maximise effectiveness. Relief typically begins within 2–7 days and lasts 6–12 weeks, though in some patients benefits persist significantly longer.

What happens at The Vesey
From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.
Consultant assessment
Review of your symptoms, examination of the affected joint, and review of any imaging. Confirmation that cortisone injection is appropriate and discussion of expected benefit duration.
Injection preparation
The skin is cleaned with antiseptic. Local anaesthetic may be applied. Ultrasound guidance is used to confirm needle position.
Cortisone injection
A mixture of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic is injected into the joint or bursa under ultrasound guidance. Takes approximately 10–15 minutes in total.
Aftercare
Rest the injected area for 24–48 hours. Avoid strenuous activity for 2–5 days.
Recovery — what to expect
Brief post-injection soreness for 24–48 hours is common as the local anaesthetic wears off before the cortisone takes effect. Pain relief begins within 2–7 days.
Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
