Private Facet Joint Injection in Sutton Coldfield
Facet joint injection for chronic back and neck pain from facet joint arthritis. Diagnostic and therapeutic. From £1,200. Same-week pain consultant. Published price.
What is facet joint injection?
Facet joints are small joints at the back of the spine that connect adjacent vertebrae and provide stability and limited spinal movement. Like any joint, they can develop arthritis — most commonly in the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) spine — causing pain that is typically worse with extension and rotation of the spine.
Facet joint injections deliver local anaesthetic and steroid directly into the facet joint under fluoroscopic guidance. They serve a dual purpose: diagnostic (significant pain relief after injection confirms the facet joints as the pain source) and therapeutic (the steroid reduces joint inflammation and provides pain relief). A positive response to facet joint injection also identifies patients suitable for radiofrequency ablation for longer-lasting relief.

Who is facet joint injection for?
You may be a suitable candidate for facet joint injection if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Chronic axial back or neck pain worsened by extension and rotation
- Pain not radiating significantly into the arm or leg (distinguishing it from disc-related radicular pain)
- Spinal pain related to known facet joint arthritis on CT or MRI
- Exploration of the facet joints as a pain source before considering radiofrequency ablation
- Failure of physiotherapy and oral analgesia for chronic spinal pain

What happens at The Vesey
From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.
Consultant assessment
Clinical examination and review of imaging to identify whether the facet joints are likely to be a significant pain source.
Preparation
Aspirin and anticoagulants adjusted if required.
Facet joint injection
Under fluoroscopic guidance, small needles are placed into the facet joints at the implicated levels. Steroid and local anaesthetic are injected. Takes approximately 20–30 minutes.
Post-procedure assessment
Pain scores are recorded before and after the injection to assess the diagnostic response.
Recovery — what to expect
Light activity recommended for 24 hours. Some patients experience temporary increased soreness for 24–48 hours before the steroid effect begins.
Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
