What is grommets (ear tubes)?
Grommets (tympanostomy tubes or ventilation tubes) are tiny plastic tubes inserted into the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear space and allow fluid to drain. They are most commonly inserted in children with persistent glue ear (otitis media with effusion) causing hearing loss, speech delay, or recurrent ear infections. Adults may also require grommets for eustachian tube dysfunction.
Grommet insertion is one of the most commonly performed operations in children. It is performed under a short general anaesthetic and takes approximately 15 minutes. The procedure provides immediate relief of hearing loss and significantly reduces ear infection frequency.

What happens at The Vesey
From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.
ENT consultant assessment
Examination of the eardrums using an otoscope and microscope. Hearing tests (audiogram and tympanogram) to confirm glue ear and measure the degree of hearing loss.
Pre-operative assessment
Routine pre-operative assessment. For children, a paediatric anaesthetist is involved.
Grommet insertion
A very small incision is made in the eardrum and the fluid is suctioned from the middle ear. The grommet is inserted into the incision. Takes approximately 15 minutes.
Recovery
Discharged within a few hours. Hearing improvement is usually immediate.
Recovery — what to expect
No significant recovery required. Children typically return to school the next day. Grommets remain in place for 6–18 months before naturally extruding. Ear protection for swimming is often recommended.
Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.
