Ear, nose and throat conditions account for around 20% of all GP consultations, but NHS ENT outpatient waits routinely exceed 18 weeks. At The Vesey, a consultant ENT assessment with flexible nasendoscopy, otoscopy and audiology can be completed in a single appointment, with surgical pathways available the same week.

Our ENT surgeon is on the GMC specialist register, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Otolaryngology), and holds a substantive NHS consultant post. We follow ENT UK practice standards.

From our consultant

"Patients are often shocked at how quickly the right diagnosis can be made when there's time and the right equipment in the room. A flexible nasendoscopy that takes 30 seconds answers questions that would otherwise need weeks of pathway escalation."

Mr Ramanathan Swaminathan · Consultant ENT Surgeon, The Vesey

Adult tonsillectomy — what to know

Adult tonsillectomy is one of our commonest ENT surgical packages. Around 1 in 200 UK adults per year develops recurrent tonsillitis severe enough to warrant surgery. Standard SIGN criteria:

  • 7+ episodes of tonsillitis in the previous year, or
  • 5+ episodes per year for two consecutive years, or
  • 3+ episodes per year for three consecutive years
  • ...each requiring time off work, antibiotics or significant functional impact

Surgery is straightforward but recovery is notoriously uncomfortable — typically 10–14 days off work with a structured analgesia plan. Our inclusive package (from £3,400) covers surgeon, anaesthetic, day-case facility, all medication and follow-up. Honest preparation about recovery is part of consent.

Chronic sinusitis — when surgery helps

Chronic rhinosinusitis affects around 11% of UK adults. First-line treatment is medical — saline irrigation, intranasal corticosteroids, treatment of allergy. Most patients improve without surgery.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is considered when:

  • Symptoms persist for over 12 weeks despite full medical therapy
  • Nasal polyps not responding to medication
  • Recurrent acute sinusitis (4+ episodes per year)
  • CT imaging confirms persistent inflammatory change

FESS is a day-case procedure under general anaesthetic. Recovery is faster than tonsillectomy — most patients return to office work within a week. Inclusive surgical package from £5,200.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private ENT specialist cost in Sutton Coldfield?

Initial 30-minute consultant consultation with flexible nasendoscopy where indicated is £260. Follow-ups £180. Microsuction wax removal £90 for both ears.

Can I get ear wax removed without a consultation?

Yes — standalone microsuction wax removal at £90 for both ears. Video otoscope so you can see what's been removed.

Do you offer adult tonsillectomy?

Yes — inclusive package from £3,400 at our partner day-case facility, covering surgeon, anaesthetic, facility, follow-up and all medication. Typical wait 1–3 weeks from decision.

Will the consultant see children?

Yes. Children of any age. Common paediatric ENT concerns: recurrent tonsillitis, glue ear (grommets), snoring/sleep apnoea, persistent earache.

Can I get a hearing test?

Yes. Pure-tone audiometry in-clinic — £90 inclusive. Specialised testing also available.

What about tinnitus?

Multifactorial. Our consultant excludes treatable causes, arranges audiometry, and refers for tinnitus retraining therapy or hearing aid review where appropriate.

Vertigo — what can you do?

Detailed history, neurological examination, bedside tests (Dix-Hallpike, head impulse). Most BPPV resolves with a single Epley manoeuvre. Other causes managed with medication and vestibular physiotherapy.

Yes. We establish whether snoring is simple, or has OSA component needing formal sleep study. Refer for sleep studies where indicated; palatal surgery in selected cases.

Are skin prick tests available for nasal allergy?

Yes — results in 15 minutes against a panel of UK aeroallergens plus selected foods if indicated.

Does insurance cover ENT?
