From our consultant
"Patients are often shocked at how quickly the right diagnosis can be made when there's time and the right equipment in the room. A flexible nasendoscopy that takes 30 seconds answers questions that would otherwise need weeks of pathway escalation."
Mr Ramanathan Swaminathan · Consultant ENT Surgeon, The Vesey
Adult tonsillectomy — what to know
Adult tonsillectomy is one of our commonest ENT surgical packages. Around 1 in 200 UK adults per year develops recurrent tonsillitis severe enough to warrant surgery. Standard SIGN criteria:
- 7+ episodes of tonsillitis in the previous year, or
- 5+ episodes per year for two consecutive years, or
- 3+ episodes per year for three consecutive years
- ...each requiring time off work, antibiotics or significant functional impact
Surgery is straightforward but recovery is notoriously uncomfortable — typically 10–14 days off work with a structured analgesia plan. Our inclusive package (from £3,400) covers surgeon, anaesthetic, day-case facility, all medication and follow-up. Honest preparation about recovery is part of consent.
Chronic sinusitis — when surgery helps
Chronic rhinosinusitis affects around 11% of UK adults. First-line treatment is medical — saline irrigation, intranasal corticosteroids, treatment of allergy. Most patients improve without surgery.
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is considered when:
- Symptoms persist for over 12 weeks despite full medical therapy
- Nasal polyps not responding to medication
- Recurrent acute sinusitis (4+ episodes per year)
- CT imaging confirms persistent inflammatory change
FESS is a day-case procedure under general anaesthetic. Recovery is faster than tonsillectomy — most patients return to office work within a week. Inclusive surgical package from £5,200.
