About the procedure

What is inguinal hernia repair?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue — usually a portion of bowel or fatty tissue — pushes through a weak point in the inguinal canal in the groin. It is the most common type of hernia, affecting approximately 25% of men and 3% of women during their lifetime.

Surgical repair is recommended for symptomatic hernias and for any hernia with a risk of strangulation. Modern hernia repair is most commonly performed laparoscopically (TEP or TAPP technique) using mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall, though open repair remains appropriate in some cases. The procedure takes approximately 45–60 minutes under general or local anaesthesia.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Consultant assessment

Clinical examination to confirm the hernia type and discuss the appropriate surgical approach — laparoscopic vs open, and the use of mesh reinforcement.

Pre-operative assessment

Routine blood tests and anaesthetic review.

Hernia repair

Performed under general or local anaesthesia. Laparoscopic repair: three small incisions in the abdomen. The hernia sac is reduced and mesh is placed to reinforce the abdominal wall.

Recovery

Discharged on the same day or after one night. Light activity within days.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Return to desk work 1–2 weeks. Driving at 1–2 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity at 4–6 weeks. Full recovery typically 4–6 weeks.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Inguinal Hernia Repair — frequently asked questions

Is laparoscopic hernia repair better than open?
Laparoscopic repair offers faster recovery and earlier return to activities. Open repair has equivalent long-term outcomes and is preferred in certain situations including prior abdominal surgery. Your consultant will advise on the most appropriate approach.
How much does inguinal hernia repair cost at The Vesey?
Inguinal hernia repair at The Vesey is from £3,200. A consultant assessment costs from £260.
Will my hernia recur after repair?
Recurrence rates after mesh repair are approximately 1–3% — significantly lower than non-mesh repair. Recurrence is more common with open non-mesh repair and in bilateral hernias.
Can both hernias be repaired at the same time?
Yes. Bilateral inguinal hernias are often repaired simultaneously, particularly with the laparoscopic approach which provides access to both sides through the same incisions.
Do I need a GP referral for hernia repair at The Vesey?
No — you can book a general surgeon directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
