Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a general surgery consultation?

No. You can self-refer directly to our general surgeons without a GP letter. If you have been referred by your GP or another specialist, we accept those referrals too.

How much does a private general surgery consultation cost?

Consultant general surgery consultations start from £260. Surgical procedure costs depend on the type and complexity and are quoted clearly before any procedure.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most patients are seen within 1–2 weeks. Urgent surgical concerns can often be seen sooner — contact us on 0121 387 3727. Private general surgery access is typically 1–2 weeks vs 12+ weeks on the NHS.

Does The Vesey accept health insurance for general surgery?

Yes. The Vesey is recognised by BUPA, Vitality, AXA, WPA, Cigna, Aviva, and Healix. Please have your policy number and pre-authorisation reference to hand when booking.

Can The Vesey treat haemorrhoids without surgery?

Yes. Banding and injection sclerotherapy are available for suitable haemorrhoids (grade 1–3) and avoid the need for formal surgery in most cases.

What is the difference between a hernia repair under general vs local anaesthetic?

Small hernias may be repaired under local anaesthetic, but most inguinal hernia repairs are performed under general anaesthetic at a surgical facility. Your surgeon will advise on the most appropriate approach at consultation.

What investigations can a general surgeon arrange?

Our general surgeons can arrange abdominal ultrasound, CT abdomen and pelvis, OGD (upper GI endoscopy), colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and anorectal physiology studies.

Is free parking available?

Is gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) surgery done at The Vesey?

The Vesey carries out the consultation and pre-operative assessment. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is performed at a partner surgical facility, co-ordinated by your consultant.
