What is lipoma removal?
A lipoma is a benign, slow-growing fatty lump that forms in the soft tissue just below the skin. They are extremely common — affecting approximately 1 in 100 people — and are almost always harmless. They typically feel soft, moveable, and non-tender, and are most common on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms and thighs.
The NHS now rarely removes lipomas as they are classified as low-priority cosmetic procedures. However, lipomas may cause pain when pressing on nerves, restrict movement, or cause significant cosmetic concern — all valid reasons for surgical removal.
Lipoma excision is performed under local anaesthetic as a straightforward day-case procedure. The lipoma is removed through a small incision with precise dissection of the capsule to minimise recurrence.
