About the procedure

What is nasal polypectomy?

Nasal polyps are soft, non-cancerous growths that form on the lining of the nose or sinuses, typically as a result of chronic inflammation. They are a common condition, affecting approximately 4% of adults, and are particularly associated with asthma, aspirin sensitivity, and allergic rhinitis.

Nasal polypectomy is the surgical removal of these growths, performed endoscopically — using a small telescope and suction device inserted through the nostrils, with no external incisions. The procedure is usually performed in conjunction with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) to improve sinus drainage and reduce recurrence.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

ENT consultant assessment

Nasal endoscopy to assess polyp extent, and CT sinuses if FESS is being considered alongside polypectomy.

Pre-operative preparation

Short course of oral steroids may be prescribed before surgery to reduce polyp size.

Endoscopic polypectomy

Under general anaesthesia, a nasal endoscope is inserted and the polyps are removed using a microdebrider. FESS is often performed simultaneously.

Recovery

Nasal packs for 24–48 hours. Nasal saline irrigation begins the day after surgery.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Nasal congestion and discharge for 2–4 weeks. Smell improvement may be gradual. Oral steroids are often prescribed post-operatively. Return to work within 1–2 weeks.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Nasal Polypectomy — frequently asked questions

Will nasal polyps come back after surgery?
Nasal polyps have a tendency to recur, particularly in patients with asthma and aspirin sensitivity. Long-term use of nasal steroid sprays after surgery significantly reduces recurrence. Some patients require repeat surgery.
How much does nasal polypectomy cost at The Vesey?
Nasal polypectomy at The Vesey is from £2,200. An ENT consultant assessment costs from £260.
How soon will I notice an improvement in my breathing?
Most patients notice immediate improvement in nasal airflow following surgery. Smell recovery can take 4–12 weeks as post-operative swelling resolves.
Can nasal polyps cause loss of smell?
Yes. Anosmia (loss of smell) and hyposmia (reduced smell) are hallmark symptoms of significant nasal polyposis. Surgery to remove the polyps often improves smell, though recovery is variable.
Do I need a GP referral for nasal polypectomy at The Vesey?
No — you can book an ENT consultant directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
