When something doesn't feel right

An acute panel is a fast, broad look across the body when you're under the weather — useful when symptoms are vague or you simply want a clinician's read on what's going on. It is not a replacement for emergency care.

Feeling unwell, not sure why

Vague symptoms — fatigue, nausea, feeling off-colour — and you want a quick, broad check.

Recovering from illness

You've been unwell and want to check your organs and salts have settled back to normal.

Checking liver & kidneys

You want a rapid read on how your liver, kidneys and salts are coping.

On medication

You take regular medicines and want to keep an eye on the organs that process them.

Can't wait weeks

You want a thorough check this week, without a referral or an NHS waiting list.

Reassurance

You want a clinician to confirm whether the basics are in order, or flag what isn't.

22 markers across 6 areas of your health

In a single blood draw, this panel takes a rapid look across the systems that most often explain feeling unwell. Here's what each group can tell you.

Full blood count

Red cells, white cells and platelets give a broad picture of anaemia, infection and general blood health.

1 marker

Liver function

ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin and albumin show how your liver is coping and can flag inflammation or strain.

6 markers

Kidney function

Creatinine, eGFR and urea show how well your kidneys are filtering — important when you're unwell or dehydrated.

3 markers

Salts & minerals

Sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate and adjusted calcium — electrolyte balance that can shift quickly when ill.

5 markers

Blood sugar

Glucose and HbA1c can help identify or rule out raised blood sugar, pre-diabetes and diabetes.

2 markers

Cholesterol & heart risk

A full lipid profile — total, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and the cholesterol ratio — for cardiovascular health.

A core acute panel covering a full blood count, liver function, kidney function, salts and minerals, blood sugar and a full lipid profile. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Important: This panel supports a non-emergency assessment and is not a substitute for urgent care. If you have severe or worsening symptoms — such as chest pain, breathing difficulty, confusion or signs of serious infection — call 999 or go to A&E.

Your questions, answered

What does an "acute" medical panel mean?
"Acute" simply means a check designed for when you are feeling unwell now, rather than a routine wellness screen. This 22-marker panel takes a rapid look across the major organ systems — a full blood count, liver and kidney function, salts and minerals, blood sugar and cholesterol — so a clinician can quickly see whether anything obvious is out of range and help guide what to do next.
Is this a substitute for going to A&E?
No. If you have severe symptoms — such as chest pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or signs of a serious infection — you should call 999 or go to A&E. This panel is a screening investigation for non-emergency symptoms and to support a clinical assessment, not a replacement for urgent or emergency care.
How quickly can I be seen and get results?
Appointment availability varies depending on clinician availability, and your results are shared once ready. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who flags anything outside the normal range with clear guidance.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Appointment availability varies depending on clinician availability. Please check our online booking system for the latest available appointments.
How is Acute Medical Panel 1 different from Panel 2?
Panel 1 is the core acute check across the main organ systems. Acute Medical Panel 2 builds on it with additional markers — including iron studies, inflammation (CRP), creatine kinase, uric acid and a urinalysis — for more complex or persistent presentations. If you are unsure which is right, call us on 0121 387 3727.
What happens if a result comes back abnormal?
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test, or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.

Understanding your Acute Medical Panel 1 results

Each result in your Acute Medical Panel 1 is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Full Blood Count

Screens for anaemia, infection, and platelet abnormalities — a first-line test in acute presentations.

Urea & Electrolytes

Assesses kidney function and electrolyte balance, essential in acute illness.

CRP

Rises rapidly in response to infection and inflammation; used to gauge severity and monitor response to treatment.

Liver Function Tests

Checks for liver injury or dysfunction, which can occur in systemic illness.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
