Getting to the bottom of anaemia and low iron

One blood draw checks the full blood count, iron stores, B12, folate and inflammation together — so a clinician can help identify or rule out the common, treatable causes of anaemia rather than just confirming it's present. £193 · clinician-reviewed results · CQC-regulated.

Who it's for

If you're tired, pale or breathless, start here

Anaemia affects around 1 in 10 UK adults and is a common cause of fatigue, breathlessness and reduced stamina. Its causes vary — and the right treatment depends on finding the right one. This panel is a sensible first step if you recognise any of these.

Tired, pale or breathless

Persistent fatigue, pallor or getting out of breath more easily than you used to.

Heavy periods

Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common causes of iron deficiency in women.

Vegan or vegetarian

Plant-based diets can run low in iron and B12 — this panel checks both properly.

Older adults

B12 deficiency and anaemia of chronic disease become more common with age.

Gut conditions

Coeliac disease, IBD or previous gastric surgery can impair absorption of iron and B12.

A clear answer

You've been told your bloods are 'a bit low' and want the full picture explained.

What we check

10 markers across 4 areas

Rather than simply confirming anaemia, this panel screens the areas most likely to explain it — in a single blood draw.

Full blood count

Red cells, white cells and platelets confirm whether anaemia is present and hint at its type.

1 panel

Iron stores

Ferritin, serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation can spot iron deficiency before anaemia appears.

5 markers

B12 & folate

Low vitamin B12 or folate causes a different type of anaemia that's easily corrected once identified.

2 markers

Inflammation

CRP and high-sensitivity CRP flag the inflammation behind anaemia of chronic disease.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

Can a blood test tell me why I'm anaemic?
Often, yes. Anaemia is a finding, not a diagnosis in itself — the important thing is the cause. By combining a full blood count with iron studies, B12, folate and inflammatory markers, this panel can help a clinician identify or rule out the common reasons, such as iron deficiency, low B12 or folate, or anaemia linked to inflammation. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains what it means.
Do I need to fast before this blood test?
No fasting is required for this anaemia profile. If you take iron or B12 supplements, let our team know when you book, as recent supplementation can affect some results.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. A clinician reviews every result and flags anything outside the normal range with a clear explanation and sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
What happens if a result is abnormal?
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.

Understanding your Anaemia Profile results

Each result in your Anaemia Profile is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Haemoglobin

Oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Low haemoglobin confirms anaemia; severity guides investigation and treatment.

Ferritin

The body's iron storage marker. Low ferritin is the earliest sign of iron deficiency, even before anaemia develops.

Vitamin B12

Essential for red blood cell production and nerve function. Deficiency causes macrocytic anaemia and neurological symptoms.

Folate

B-vitamin required for DNA synthesis and red cell production. Low folate causes large, immature red blood cells.

MCV (Mean Cell Volume)

Helps distinguish anaemia types: small cells (iron deficiency), large cells (B12/folate deficiency), or normal size (chronic disease).

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
