Who it's for

A clear picture of your iron — too little or too much

Iron problems are common and easy to miss. Low iron can leave you drained long before anaemia shows up on a basic test, while iron overload can quietly build up over years. This focused panel is a sensible step if you recognise any of these.

Tired and run-down

Persistent fatigue, weakness or poor concentration — low iron is one of the most common causes.

Heavy periods

Heavy or frequent menstrual bleeding is a leading cause of iron deficiency in women.

Vegetarian or vegan

Plant-based diets can make it harder to keep iron stores topped up.

Family history of haemochromatosis

Iron overload runs in families and is common in people of Northern European descent.

Checking before supplements

Find out whether your iron is actually low before spending on supplements.

Monitoring known iron issues

Keeping an eye on iron levels if you've had deficiency or overload before.

What we check

5 markers that map your iron stores and transport

Rather than a single iron reading, this panel measures the full picture — how much iron you have in store and how efficiently your body is carrying it.

Iron stores

Ferritin reflects the iron held in reserve — the most sensitive early marker of iron deficiency, often low before anaemia appears.

2 markers

Iron transport

Transferrin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) describe your body's capacity to carry iron around the bloodstream.

2 markers

Saturation

Transferrin saturation shows what proportion of your transport capacity is filled — high in overload, low in deficiency.

Transferrin Saturation

Measures serum iron, ferritin (iron stores), transferrin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation — characterising both iron stores and transport dynamics. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

What does an iron status blood test show?
It measures serum iron, ferritin (your iron stores), transferrin, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation. Together these can help a clinician identify or rule out iron deficiency — even before it causes anaemia — as well as iron overload. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains what it means.
Do I need to fast before this test?
Iron levels can vary through the day and after meals, so we often recommend a morning appointment and may ask you to avoid iron supplements beforehand. Our team will confirm any preparation when you book.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician, who flags anything outside the normal range with a clear explanation and guidance on sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
What happens if a result comes back abnormal?
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test, or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
Can I claim this on private health insurance?
Self-funded blood tests are usually paid for directly rather than through insurance, as most insurers require a referral first. If you would like to use insurance, call us on 0121 387 3727 and our team will advise on the best route for your policy.

Understanding your Iron Status results

Each result in your Iron Status is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Ferritin

The most reliable marker of iron stores. Low ferritin is the earliest indicator of iron deficiency, even before anaemia develops.

Serum Iron

The circulating iron level; fluctuates with recent diet and is less reliable alone than ferritin.

TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity)

Reflects transferrin — the transport protein for iron. TIBC rises when iron stores are low as the body tries to capture more iron.

Haemoglobin

Falls when iron deficiency is severe enough to impair red cell production — the end-stage of iron depletion.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
