An early look at the hormonal factors involved in fertility.

Possible early menopause

Symptoms suggesting reduced ovarian function before the expected age.

Unexplained changes

Mood, weight or energy changes you suspect may be hormonal.

What we check

8 markers across your reproductive hormones

These hormones work together to regulate the menstrual cycle and androgen balance. Measuring them together gives the clearest picture.

Cycle-regulating hormones

FSH and LH from the pituitary drive the ovaries — their pattern helps assess ovarian reserve and cycle control.

FSH & LH

Ovarian hormones

Oestradiol and progesterone reflect ovarian activity across the menstrual cycle.

Oestradiol

Prolactin

Raised prolactin can disrupt periods and fertility, and is an important cause to identify or rule out.

Prolactin

Androgens

Testosterone, SHBG, DHEA-sulphate and the free androgen index assess biologically active male-type hormones, relevant to PCOS.

TestosteroneSex Hormone Binding GlobulinFree Androgen Index

Measures FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and the free androgen index (FAI). The free androgen index estimates biologically active testosterone, which is more clinically meaningful than total testosterone alone. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

What does a hormone profile blood test show?
It measures FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, SHBG and the free androgen index. Together these can help a clinician identify or rule out hormonal causes of irregular periods, PCOS, raised prolactin and reduced ovarian function. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains what it means.
Does it matter when in my cycle I take this test?
Yes — several of these hormones change across the menstrual cycle, so the timing of your test affects how results are interpreted. Our team will advise on the best timing when you book.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician, who flags anything outside the normal range with a clear explanation and guidance on sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
What happens if a result comes back abnormal?
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test, or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
Can I claim this on private health insurance?
Self-funded blood tests are usually paid for directly rather than through insurance, as most insurers require a referral first. If you would like to use insurance, call us on 0121 387 3727 and our team will advise on the best route for your policy.

Understanding your Hormone Profile results

Each result in your Hormone Profile is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Testosterone

Measured in both sexes; low in men suggests hypogonadism; raised in women may indicate PCOS or adrenal dysfunction.

DHEAS

Adrenal androgen; elevated in adrenal tumours or PCOS; declines naturally with age.

Prolactin

Hormone from the pituitary gland. Elevated prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia) can suppress ovulation and testosterone production; causes include pituitary adenoma and medications.

FSH & LH

Pituitary hormones controlling the reproductive cycle. Patterns help diagnose primary vs secondary gonadal failure.

Oestradiol & Progesterone

Key female sex hormones; measured to assess cycle phase, ovulation, and menopausal status.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
