About this test
The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy production, heart rate, body temperature, and mood through the hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3). Thyroid disorders are among the most common hormonal conditions in the UK, affecting an estimated 1 in 20 people — with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) both causing significant symptoms that are often misattributed to other conditions. This panel includes thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibody tests, enabling detection of autoimmune thyroid disease including Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.
Note: Measures TSH, Free T4, Free T3, anti-TPO antibodies, and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies — providing a complete picture of thyroid function and autoimmune status.
What this test can detect
- Hypothyroidism — fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression, constipation, dry skin and hair
- Hyperthyroidism — anxiety, weight loss, palpitations, heat intolerance, tremor, and diarrhoea
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis — autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland, the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the UK
- Graves' disease — autoimmune hyperthyroidism causing elevated T3 and T4 with TSH suppression
- Subclinical thyroid dysfunction — abnormal TSH with normal T3/T4, often pre-symptomatic but warranting monitoring
Who should have this test?
- Anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, weight changes, mood disturbance, or temperature intolerance
- Women over 40, in whom thyroid disease is significantly more prevalent
- Individuals with a family history of thyroid disease or autoimmune conditions
- Those on thyroid hormone replacement therapy requiring dose monitoring
- Patients with unexplained hair loss, dry skin, or irregular menstrual cycles
- Anyone with elevated cholesterol, as hypothyroidism is a common secondary cause
