Who it's for

A sensible first check for a wide range of symptoms

The full blood count is the test doctors reach for most often, because it touches so many areas of health in a single draw. It's a sensible starting point if you recognise any of these.

Tired, pale or breathless

Persistent fatigue, paleness or getting out of breath easily — classic signs of possible anaemia.

Recurrent infections

Frequent or lingering infections, where the white cell count can give a useful picture of immune health.

Unexplained bruising

Easy bruising or bleeding, where the platelet count helps assess how well your blood is clotting.

A routine health baseline

Part of a general check-up or before a procedure, to confirm your blood is in good shape.

On medication that affects blood

Some medicines can affect the bone marrow or immune system, and an FBC keeps an eye on this.

Reassurance and a clear answer

You want a thorough, foundational check of your blood with a clinician's read on the numbers.

What we check

14 markers across your three blood cell lines

The FBC measures the three main types of blood cell — plus the indices that describe their size and quality. Here's what each group can tell you.

Red cells & haemoglobin

Haemoglobin, haematocrit and red cell count show how well your blood carries oxygen — a low result can point to anaemia.

5 markers

Red cell indices

MCV, MCH and MCHC describe the size and colour of your red cells — clues that help pinpoint the type of anaemia.

3 markers

White cells & differential

The white cell count and five-part differential (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils) reflect your immune response.

6 markers

Platelets & clotting

The platelet count helps assess how well your blood clots — relevant to bruising, bleeding and clotting risk.

Platelet Count

A complete full blood count: haemoglobin, haematocrit, red blood cell count, MCV, MCH, MCHC, white blood cell count with five-part differential, and platelet count. This is a screening panel and does not replace a clinical diagnosis — every result is reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

What is a full blood count and what does it show?
A full blood count (FBC) is one of the most common blood tests in medicine. It measures your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets — along with derived indices such as haemoglobin, haematocrit and cell size. Together these can help identify or rule out anaemia, infection, inflammation and problems with clotting. Every result is reviewed by a clinician who explains what it means.
Do I need to fast before a full blood count?
No fasting is required for a standalone full blood count. You can eat and drink normally beforehand. Our team will confirm any preparation when you book.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician, who flags anything outside the normal range with a clear explanation and guidance on sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
What happens if a result comes back abnormal?
A clinician reviews every panel before it is released. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a GP appointment, a repeat test, or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
Can I claim this on private health insurance?
Self-funded blood tests are usually paid for directly rather than through insurance, as most insurers require a referral first. If you would like to use insurance, call us on 0121 387 3727 and our team will advise on the best route for your policy.
