About the Cholera Vaccination
Cholera is a potentially life-threatening diarrhoeal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, transmitted through contaminated water and food. It remains endemic in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Haiti, and areas affected by conflict or natural disaster where sanitation infrastructure has been disrupted. Without prompt treatment, severe cholera can be fatal within hours due to extreme fluid loss.
The oral cholera vaccine (Dukoral) provides protection against both cholera and travellers' diarrhoea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) — a common cause of holiday sickness. Dukoral is taken as an oral suspension, making it one of the few travel vaccines administered by mouth rather than injection.
Who should have this vaccination?
- Travellers to cholera-endemic regions, particularly those visiting rural areas or staying in basic accommodation
- Aid workers, healthcare volunteers, or those working in disaster relief settings
- Backpackers and adventure travellers with limited access to safe food and water
- Those visiting friends and family in high-risk countries
- Travellers to destinations with active cholera outbreaks
Vaccination schedule
The cholera vaccine (Dukoral) is given as an oral course of two doses, separated by a minimum of one week and a maximum of six weeks. Both doses must be completed at least one week before entering a risk area. The course provides protection for approximately two years in adults and six months in children aged 2 to 6. A single booster dose is sufficient for those revaccinating within two years.
Frequently asked questions

The Cholera vaccine is available at The Vesey Private Hospital from £90 per dose. Book online or call 0121 387 3727.

Is the Cholera vaccine available on Sundays in Sutton Coldfield?
Yes. The Vesey is open every day of the week including Sundays from 8am to 8pm — the only private clinic in Sutton Coldfield with 7-day access for vaccinations.
Is the cholera vaccine given as an oral drink or an injection?
The cholera vaccine used in the UK (Dukoral) is an oral vaccine — taken as a drink, not an injection. Two doses are required, taken 1–6 weeks apart. It also provides short-term protection against travellers' diarrhoea caused by ETEC.
How long does cholera vaccine protection last?
Protection against cholera lasts approximately 2 years in adults and children aged 6 and over. Children aged 2–5 require a third dose and protection lasts around 6 months. A booster dose is recommended if more than 2 years have passed since the primary course.
Does the cholera vaccine replace careful food and water hygiene?
No. The vaccine significantly reduces risk but food and water precautions remain essential: drink only bottled or boiled water, avoid ice, raw shellfish, and street food. The vaccine and hygiene measures together provide the best protection.
Is the cholera vaccine safe in pregnancy?
The oral cholera vaccine (Dukoral) is not routinely recommended in pregnancy due to limited safety data. For pregnant travellers at very high risk, the benefit-to-risk balance should be assessed individually with a travel health clinician at The Vesey.
