About the Typhoid Vaccination
Typhoid fever is a systemic bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, transmitted through consumption of food or water contaminated with the faeces or urine of an infected person. It is a significant cause of illness and death in parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Central and South America, with an estimated 11 to 20 million cases occurring globally each year. Without antibiotic treatment, typhoid carries a case fatality rate of 10 to 30%; even with treatment, 1 to 4% of cases are fatal.
The typhoid vaccine is available as an injectable inactivated vaccine (Typhim Vi, providing protection for approximately three years) or as an oral live attenuated vaccine (Vivotif, providing protection for approximately five years in adults). The injectable form is suitable from age two; the oral form is suitable for those aged six and over. Neither vaccine provides absolute protection, so food and water hygiene precautions remain essential.
Who should have this vaccination?
- Travellers to typhoid-endemic regions, including the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Central and South America
- Those visiting friends and family in endemic countries — visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travellers are at particularly high risk
- Backpackers and adventure travellers eating from street food stalls or local restaurants
- Those staying in accommodation with limited access to safe drinking water
- Healthcare workers and aid workers in endemic regions
Vaccination schedule
The injectable typhoid vaccine (Typhim Vi) is given as a single dose at least two weeks before travel, providing protection for three years. The oral vaccine (Vivotif) is taken as three capsules on alternate days, completing the course at least one week before departure, and provides five years of protection in adults. Our clinical team will advise on the most suitable preparation based on your travel dates, destination, and medical history. The injectable vaccine can be given simultaneously with other travel vaccines at the same visit.

Is the Typhoid vaccine available on Sundays in Sutton Coldfield?
Yes. The Vesey is open every day of the week including Sundays from 8am to 8pm — the only private clinic in Sutton Coldfield with 7-day access for vaccinations.
Is the typhoid vaccine given as an injection or as an oral capsule?
Both are available. The injected typhoid vaccine (Typhim Vi) is a single-dose injection offering protection for 3 years. Oral typhoid vaccine (Vivotif) consists of 3 capsules taken on alternate days, providing protection for approximately 3 years. The injected vaccine is more convenient and the most commonly used option at The Vesey.
How long does typhoid vaccine protection last?
Both the injectable and oral typhoid vaccines provide protection for approximately 3 years, after which a booster is recommended for those continuing to travel to risk areas. Protection is not 100% and food and water hygiene precautions should always be maintained alongside vaccination.
Does the typhoid vaccine replace food and water hygiene precautions?
No. The vaccine reduces risk significantly but does not provide complete protection. Precautions should still be taken: drink only bottled or boiled water, avoid ice, eat only thoroughly cooked food, and avoid raw salads and unpeeled fruit in high-risk destinations.
Which countries carry a high risk of typhoid?
High-risk areas include the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal), South and Southeast Asia, parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and South America. Travellers visiting friends and family in these regions are at particularly high risk due to more intimate contact with local food and water.
