About the Hepatitis B Vaccination
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), spread through blood, sexual contact, and from mother to child during birth. It is significantly more infectious than HIV. While most adults clear an acute infection naturally, approximately 5% develop chronic hepatitis B — which can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma over time.
Hepatitis B is found worldwide but is particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, East and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The vaccine is highly effective, providing long-term protection in over 95% of recipients. A combined hepatitis A and B vaccine (Twinrix) is available for individuals requiring protection against both strains.
Who should have this vaccination?
- Travellers to hepatitis B-endemic regions, particularly those planning activities that increase exposure risk such as contact sports, medical volunteering, or tattoos abroad
- Healthcare workers and first responders with potential exposure to blood or body fluids
- Individuals with multiple sexual partners, or whose partner has hepatitis B
- People who inject drugs or share needles
- Individuals with chronic liver disease or pre-existing hepatitis C infection
- Those travelling long-term or likely to require medical or dental care in endemic regions
Vaccination schedule
The standard hepatitis B vaccination course consists of three doses, given at 0, 1, and 6 months. This schedule provides long-term protection in the vast majority of recipients. For those needing rapid protection before travel, an accelerated schedule of 0, 7, and 21 days is available, with a 12-month booster to consolidate immunity. The combined Twinrix (hepatitis A and B) vaccine follows the same schedules. Our clinical team will advise on the most appropriate course based on your travel dates, destination, and risk profile.
