How to prepare
Most blood tests need no preparation. For accurate results on certain tests, please follow this guidance:
- Fasting (10–12 hours, water only) — required for: cholesterol/lipid profile, fasting glucose, HbA1c, comprehensive metabolic panels. Morning appointments are easiest.
- Time of day matters for: testosterone (morning between 7–10am gives most reliable results), cortisol (timing critical — typically 9am), prolactin (morning).
- Hormone tests in women — FSH/LH should be tested days 2–5 of the menstrual cycle for fertility assessment; progesterone day 21 for ovulation check.
- Continue medications as normal unless specifically advised otherwise.
- Hydration — drink plenty of water before your appointment; it makes venepuncture easier and faster.
- Avoid heavy exercise in the 24 hours before testosterone, CK and cortisol testing.
Why test privately?
The NHS provides bloodwork in the context of clinical pathways — once a GP has made a clinical case for the test, with criteria varying by ICB. Private blood testing covers four scenarios where NHS access is harder:
- Speed — same-day phlebotomy appointments and prompt, clinician-reviewed results, rather than waiting for a GP appointment plus the actual test.
- Choice — many tests the NHS doesn't routinely fund: comprehensive thyroid (with antibodies), vitamin D, hormone panels in non-menopausal women, AMH, advanced cardiovascular markers.
- Self-direction — you choose what you want measured, without needing to justify it to a GP first. We are happy to discuss appropriate testing if you're unsure.
- Convenience — open 7 days a week including Sundays, no registration, walk-in availability.
Frequently asked questions
How much do private blood tests cost?
Single tests from £23. Panels from £39 (FBC) to £395 (full executive health screen). All inclusive of phlebotomy fee, lab analysis and written report.
How quickly will I get results?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready. Turnaround varies by test — standard panels are typically quickest, while specialised, genetic and complex tests take longer.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. Most private blood tests can be ordered directly. For some specialised tests (PSA, testosterone, complex hormones) we recommend a brief GP consultation so the result is properly interpreted in context — but it's optional.
Do I need to fast?
Yes for cholesterol, lipid profile, fasting glucose and HbA1c — 10–12 hours fasting (water only). For most other tests no fasting is needed. Morning appointments work best for fasted bloods.
What if my result is abnormal?
Any out-of-range result is flagged in the report with a brief explanation. We offer a free 10-minute phone interpretation call with a GP for context. If further investigation or treatment is needed, you can book a GP or consultant appointment at standard rates.
Where are the bloods analysed?
At UKAS-accredited NHS pathology laboratories — the same labs used by NHS hospitals for clinical bloodwork. Results are released through our system as soon as the lab finalises them.
Can I drop in without booking?
Yes — walk-in phlebotomy is available during opening hours. Booked patients are always seen first, so a 2-minute online booking guarantees no wait.
Can I share results with my NHS GP?
Yes. Results can be emailed to you and shared with any clinician you nominate. We can also write a brief letter to your NHS GP summarising results and recommendations.
Do you take blood from children?
Yes — by appointment, with a paediatric-trained phlebotomist. We typically use distraction techniques and topical anaesthetic cream. Children's testing is usually arranged through a paediatrician consultation first.
Does insurance cover private blood tests?
Usually only when ordered as part of a covered consultation. Tests requested directly without a consulting GP are typically self-pay.
