What we check

10 parameters from one urine sample

A dipstick reads several markers at once, giving a broad first look at urinary tract, kidney and metabolic health. Here's what the groups can tell you.

Infection markers

Nitrites and leucocytes (white blood cells) together can point towards a urinary tract infection.

2 parameters

Blood in urine

Red blood cells in urine (haematuria) are a sign worth investigating for a urinary or kidney cause.

1 parameter

Kidney markers

Protein in urine is an early marker of kidney disease, including diabetic kidney involvement.

1 parameter

Blood sugar & ketones

Glucose and ketones in urine can flag raised blood sugar or the body burning fat for fuel.

2 parameters

Liver markers

Bilirubin and urobilinogen in urine can be early pointers towards a liver or bile-flow problem.

2 parameters

Acidity (pH)

Urine pH gives context for infection and stone risk, and rounds out the metabolic picture.

1 parameter

Quick & non-invasive

No needle, no fasting — just a fresh sample in clinic, with results reviewed by a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

What does a urinalysis test check?
This dipstick test measures protein, glucose, blood, ketones, bilirubin, urobilinogen, nitrites, leucocytes and pH in a urine sample. It is a quick, non-invasive way to help identify or rule out a urinary tract infection, signs of kidney problems and raised blood sugar. Every result is reviewed by a clinician.
How is the sample collected?
You provide a fresh urine sample in clinic in a private bathroom. There is no blood draw and no special preparation, although our team will let you know if a first-morning sample would be more useful for your situation.
How long do results take?
We process your sample promptly and contact you as soon as your clinician-reviewed results are ready — turnaround varies by test. Every result is reviewed by a clinician, who flags anything that warrants attention with a clear explanation and guidance on sensible next steps.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling 0121 387 3727. Same-week appointments are available 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
What happens if something is abnormal?
A clinician reviews every result. If something is outside the normal range, we explain what it means in plain English and recommend sensible next steps — which may include a confirmatory lab test, a GP appointment or onward referral. This test is a screening investigation and is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
Can I claim this on private health insurance?
Self-funded tests are usually paid for directly rather than through insurance, as most insurers require a referral first. If you would like to use insurance, call us on 0121 387 3727 and our team will advise on the best route for your policy.

Understanding your Urinalysis results

Each result in your Urinalysis is reviewed by a clinician before release. Below is a plain-English guide to the key markers included in this panel.

Key Biomarkers

This panel assesses the key markers relevant to urinalysis. Each result is reviewed by a clinician who will flag any values outside the expected range for your age and sex.

Reference Ranges

Reference intervals are population-derived and should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical history — a result within range does not always exclude pathology, and a mildly out-of-range result may be clinically insignificant in isolation.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories and are influenced by age, sex, and other individual factors. This information is for educational purposes only and does not replace a clinical consultation. The Vesey reviews every result before it is released to you.
