Pancreatic Health Blood Test

About this test
The pancreas serves two distinct functions: endocrine secretion of insulin and glucagon regulating blood glucose, and exocrine secretion of digestive enzymes — including amylase and lipase — into the duodenum. Pancreatitis may be acute or chronic, with alcohol excess and gallstones accounting for the majority of cases. Pancreatic enzyme levels are elevated in pancreatitis, pancreatic duct obstruction, and pancreatic malignancy, making this a focused investigation for upper abdominal pain and digestive symptoms.
Note: Measures pancreatic lipase (the most sensitive and specific marker of pancreatic inflammation) and pancreatic amylase.
What this test can detect
- Acute pancreatitis — marked elevation of lipase (more specific) and amylase in acute abdominal pain
- Chronic pancreatitis — persistently elevated or fluctuating enzymes with exocrine insufficiency
- Pancreatic duct obstruction — enzyme elevation from tumour or stone
- Macroamylasaemia — benign elevation of amylase complexed with immunoglobulin
Who should have this test?
- Individuals with recurrent or persistent upper abdominal pain, particularly radiating to the back
- Those with a history of gallstones or heavy alcohol use
- Individuals with unexplained weight loss and steatorrhoea (fatty stools)
- Anyone with a family history of pancreatic disease or hereditary pancreatitis
