What a virtual GP can — and cannot — manage: a clinician's guide
Video consultations have clear strengths and equally clear limitations. Understanding both helps you get the most from your appointment and ensures you seek in-person care when it is genuinely needed.
What works particularly well virtually: Infections where symptoms are clear and an antibiotic decision can be made on history alone (UTI is the classic example — symptoms of frequency, dysuria and no haematuria in a young woman without risk factors can be safely treated without examination). Mental health — anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia — is highly amenable to video consultation. Medication reviews where investigations have already been completed (hypertension, hypothyroidism, diabetes) work seamlessly by video. Skin conditions can be assessed from high-quality smartphone photographs shared before or during the call.
What requires in-person assessment: Abdominal pain that could indicate surgical pathology (appendicitis, bowel obstruction, ectopic pregnancy) requires physical examination. Chest pain in a patient over 40 or with cardiac risk factors needs an ECG. Neurological symptoms — new onset weakness, speech change, facial droop — require urgent face-to-face assessment and probably emergency services. Children under 2 with fever should always be seen physically; fever without a focus in this age group carries serious diagnostic risk. Any joint that may be acutely infected (septic arthritis) needs urgent in-person care.
Prescription limitations: Schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs (opioids, benzodiazepines, methylphenidate, dexamfetamine) generally cannot be initiated via video consultation and require in-person assessment. Certain other medications — particularly where examination findings would influence the decision — may also be declined. Your GP will always be transparent about this and help you access the appropriate pathway.
Video consultation process — what to prepare
A well-prepared virtual appointment leads to better clinical decisions. Here is what our GPs recommend patients have ready before logging on.
Your medication list: Know the names and doses of all medications you currently take, including over-the-counter and supplements. If you are unsure, photograph the packaging or check your NHS app before the appointment.
Previous investigation results: If you have had recent blood tests, scans or letters from specialists, have these to hand or upload them via the pre-consultation form. Your GP can incorporate these into the clinical decision in real time.
Symptom history: When did symptoms start, how they have changed, what makes them better or worse, any associated symptoms. Writing a brief timeline beforehand means you do not spend your 20 minutes trying to remember dates.
Technical setup: Test your camera and microphone before the appointment. A bright, quiet room with a stable internet connection is ideal. The video link works on Chrome, Safari and Firefox — no additional software required. If you have connection issues, our team can switch to a phone consultation at no extra charge.
For skin concerns: Photograph the area in good natural light before your appointment and upload it with the pre-consultation form. A clear image taken in advance is more useful than a blurry in-call screenshot. Include a photograph that shows the location on the body as well as a close-up of the lesion.

Can the virtual GP prescribe medication?
Yes. Our GPs can prescribe the majority of common medications electronically. The prescription is sent to a pharmacy of your choice — including online pharmacies for home delivery. Controlled drugs (Schedule 2 and 3) require specific conditions and cannot always be prescribed via video.
Can I get a sick note from a virtual GP?
Yes. Our GPs can issue MED3 fit notes (sick notes) for periods of illness preventing work. Your GP will discuss your condition and the appropriate duration. Cost £25.
Is the video platform secure?
Yes. We use an NHS-approved, end-to-end encrypted video consultation platform. No recording is made without your consent. The platform is GDPR-compliant and does not store video data.
What do I need for a video appointment?

What if the GP thinks I need to be seen in person?
If your virtual GP determines that physical examination is necessary, they will recommend the most appropriate next step — either an in-person appointment at The Vesey (Sutton Coldfield), an urgent GP visit, or where appropriate, A&E. The £90 consultation fee will not be charged if the GP is unable to help remotely.
Can I use the virtual GP service from anywhere in the UK?
Yes. Our virtual GP service covers the whole of the United Kingdom. Prescriptions can be sent to any UK pharmacy.
Can the virtual GP manage mental health concerns?
Yes. Our GPs are experienced in assessing and managing anxiety, depression, stress, burnout and sleep disorders via video. They can initiate or review medication, provide referral letters to talking therapy or psychiatry, and complete self-referral letters for IAPT or private mental health services.
