Plastic surgery is best understood as reconstructive — not cosmetic — surgery. The majority of our work involves removing skin cancers with optimal margins and cosmetic closure, repairing scars, restoring function after trauma, and reconstructive procedures after cancer treatment. We don't perform high-volume cosmetic surgery; we focus on consultant-led reconstructive plastics done well.

Our consultant plastic surgeons hold FRCS in Plastic Surgery, are on the GMC specialist register, and members of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). All surgery at CQC-regulated partner facilities to RCS standards.

From our consultant

"Plastic surgery is, fundamentally, about restoring what was lost — to cancer, to injury, to time — with care for both function and how the patient feels afterwards. That requires unhurried consultations, honest conversations, and respect for the cooling-off period."

Skin cancer surgery — getting it right first time

Around 156,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed in the UK each year. Most are basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The technical decisions that matter:

  • Margin — NICE recommends 4mm for low-risk BCC, up to 10mm for high-risk lesions. Inadequate margins lead to recurrence.
  • Closure technique — simple linear, local flap, or skin graft. Wrong choice produces a poor cosmetic result.
  • Histology — every excised lesion sent to accredited NHS lab for full pathology; we discuss results with you face-to-face.
  • Follow-up — incomplete excisions need re-excision; high-risk lesions need ongoing skin surveillance.

This is why same-day removal at a non-specialist clinic is rarely appropriate for anything suspicious — the right procedure done well in the right setting is worth waiting two weeks for.

Hand surgery — when to see a plastic surgeon vs orthopaedic

Hand surgery is a recognised subspecialty in both plastic surgery and orthopaedics. As a rough guide:

  • Plastic surgery: skin, nerve and soft tissue procedures — trigger finger, carpal tunnel, ganglion, Dupuytren's, nerve repair, complex tendon repair
  • Orthopaedic surgery: bone and joint procedures — fracture fixation, joint replacement, severe arthritis

For the commonest hand complaints — pain, weakness, snapping or locking fingers, numbness — either subspecialty is appropriate. Our plastic surgeon performs around 150 hand procedures per year under local anaesthetic, with rapid return to work and excellent outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does private plastic surgery consultation cost?

Initial 30-minute consultation £260. Follow-ups £180. All procedure prices are inclusive — covering surgeon, anaesthetic, facility, dressings, follow-up and histology where relevant.

Do you do cosmetic surgery like breast augmentation or rhinoplasty?

Our focus is reconstructive plastic surgery rather than high-volume cosmetic procedures. We do offer some functional procedures with cosmetic elements (functional rhinoplasty after deviated septum, breast symmetrisation, breast reduction for back pain). For pure cosmetic breast augmentation or facial cosmetic surgery we'll suggest a specialist cosmetic provider.

Is there a cooling-off period?

Yes — minimum 2 weeks between consent and surgery for all elective procedures, per BAAPS standards. We never schedule surgery on the day of consultation.

Where is surgery performed?

At our CQC-regulated partner day-case facility within Sutton Coldfield, with consultant anaesthetist cover. All facilities meet Royal College of Surgeons standards for day-case surgery.

Can I have my mole removed today?

Not on the day of consultation. Suspicious moles are assessed first by our dermatologist or plastic surgeon, photographed, and removed in a planned procedure session within 1–2 weeks. All excised tissue is sent for histology.

What about scar revision?

Many scars improve naturally over 12–18 months; we usually advise waiting at least a year from injury before revision surgery. For keloid scars, steroid injection is often tried first. For wide or contracted scars, surgical revision under local or general anaesthetic gives good results.

How long is recovery from carpal tunnel release?

Surgery under local anaesthetic takes about 15 minutes. You can use the hand immediately for light tasks; full-strength activities return at 6–8 weeks. Time off work depends on your role — typically 2–7 days for desk work, 4–6 weeks for manual work.

Are children seen?

Selected paediatric cases — accessory digits, congenital hand differences, skin lesions, traumatic injuries — yes, by paediatric-trained surgeons at a partner paediatric facility.

Does insurance cover plastic surgery?

Reconstructive surgery (skin cancer, hand surgery, breast reconstruction) is routinely covered. Purely cosmetic surgery is generally not. Pre-authorisation always required — we handle paperwork.

Will I see the same surgeon for follow-up?

Yes. Continuity of surgeon is non-negotiable — the consultant who operates is the consultant who reviews you post-operatively at 1, 2 and 6 weeks.
