What is clinical neurophysiology?

Clinical neurophysiology investigates how the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves are working electrically. It's often used to help explain symptoms like seizures, blackouts, numbness, tingling, weakness or visual and hearing changes — either to support a diagnosis or to rule one out.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Records the brain's electrical activity from the scalp — routine, sleep-deprived and 24-hour ambulatory recordings, most often used to investigate suspected seizures or blackouts.

Measures how quickly and how well electrical signals travel along a peripheral nerve — used to screen for carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and generalised peripheral neuropathy.

1. Referral

Your GP or consultant sends a referral confirming the clinical question — or request the investigation below and we'll help arrange the referral.

2. Clinical triage

Our Clinical Physiologist reviews the referral, confirms the right investigation and assesses urgency.

3. Appointment arranged

Our administration team contacts you to schedule the investigation and send preparation instructions.

4. Investigation & report

Your test is carried out onsite, then reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist — sent to your referring clinician.

Do I need a referral for neurophysiology testing?
Yes. These investigations are triaged clinically before they're scheduled, so we need a referral from your GP, consultant or another healthcare professional confirming the clinical question before booking a date. If you're already under one of our consultants, they can refer you directly.
Who carries out the tests and who reports them?
Investigations are performed onsite by Sergio Cerqueira, a Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist and Clinical Service Manager in Neurophysiology. EEG and evoked potential studies are reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist (Dr David Martín-López or Dr Omar Al-Khayatt); nerve conduction studies are a physiologist-led service, with reports reviewed and issued by a Band 8 Clinical Physiologist in Neurophysiology.
Is this available on a fixed clinic day?
The team uses portable neurodiagnostic equipment and runs clinics in a flexible, mobile format rather than a fixed weekly slot. Once your referral is triaged, our team contacts you to arrange a convenient appointment.
How and when will I get my results?
Your consultant neurophysiologist reviews the recording and issues a written report, sent to your referring clinician and to our administration team. Nerve conduction studies are reviewed and reported by the Clinical Physiologist team.
