Frequently asked questions
Which contraception is the most effective?
Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) — the Mirena IUS, copper IUD and Nexplanon implant — are over 99% effective and require no daily action once fitted. The combined pill and mini-pill are around 93% effective with typical use.
Can I have a Mirena IUS if I've never been pregnant?
Yes. The Mirena IUS can be fitted in women who have not had children, though the procedure may be slightly more uncomfortable. At The Vesey, fitting is performed by an experienced consultant gynaecologist and comprehensive pain relief advice is provided beforehand.
How soon after a copper IUD is fitted am I protected?
A copper IUD is effective immediately after fitting. This also makes it the most effective form of emergency contraception when fitted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.
What STIs do you test for at The Vesey?
We offer comprehensive STI screening including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Results are typically available within 3–5 days and can be discussed in a follow-up phone consultation.
