MonaLisa Touch
MonaLisa Touch is a type of laser therapy to treat symptoms of vaginal atrophy like vaginal dryness and painful sex. It works by repairing your vaginal tissue. What it is
A handheld vaginal probe delivers controlled microscopic CO2 laser pulses that stimulate the vaginal mucosa to regenerate collagen, restore elasticity and increase lubrication. Three treatments at 4-6 week intervals; an annual maintenance treatment thereafter. Each session takes around 5 minutes, with minimal discomfort.
When this is relevant
- Vaginal dryness, burning or itching unresponsive to topical oestrogen.
- Painful intercourse (dyspareunia) limiting sexual function.
- Urinary urgency, frequency or recurrent UTI in the context of GSM.
- Mild stress urinary incontinence as part of the GSM picture.
- Breast cancer survivors where systemic or topical oestrogen is contraindicated.
How we investigate
Detailed history, pelvic examination, pregnancy exclusion, cervical screening up-to-date check. Pelvic ultrasound where indicated to exclude alternative causes of bleeding.
Options at The Vesey
- 3-session laser course at 4-6 week intervals.
- Annual maintenance single session.
- Concurrent topical oestrogen where not contraindicated - laser plus topical therapy is more effective than either alone.
- Pelvic floor physiotherapy referral for women with concurrent prolapse or stress incontinence.
- Honest counselling - the evidence base is moderate, not definitive; results are best in mild-to-moderate GSM and less reliable in severe atrophy.
How many MonaLisa Touch sessions are needed? +
The standard course is three sessions at 4–6 week intervals. Most women notice improvement after the first session, with full benefit at completion of the course. An annual maintenance session is recommended thereafter.
Is MonaLisa Touch suitable for breast cancer survivors? +
MonaLisa Touch is one of the few evidence-based options for women who cannot use systemic or topical oestrogen, including many breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors or tamoxifen. Our gynaecologist will review your oncology treatment history before proceeding.
Is the MonaLisa Touch procedure painful? +
Most women describe minimal discomfort — a mild warmth or pressure during the 5-minute treatment. No anaesthetic is required. A topical anaesthetic gel is applied beforehand if preferred.
How long do the results of MonaLisa Touch last? +
Benefits typically last 12–18 months after the initial course. An annual single maintenance treatment usually maintains the result. Results are best for mild-to-moderate GSM; severe atrophy may require more frequent treatment.
