Nose surgery (Septorhinoplasty)

What is Septorhinoplasty? Septorhinoplasty, commonly referred to as nose surgery, is a surgical procedure that combines nasal septum correction (septoplasty) with aesthetic changes to the external appearance of the nose (rhinoplasty). This comprehensive procedure aims to improve both nasal function and appearance. Septorhinoplasty is performed to address issues such as a deviated septum, nasal c

What it is

Septoplasty straightens a deviated nasal septum to improve breathing. Rhinoplasty alters the external nasal shape — dorsal hump, tip definition, alar width, asymmetry — for aesthetic or post-traumatic reconstruction. Combined septorhinoplasty addresses both in one operation and recovery period.

Symptoms and signs

  • Persistent nasal obstruction — one-sided or alternating — that has failed nasal sprays and saline.
  • Snoring driven by nasal-airway compromise.
  • Post-traumatic nasal deformity or breathing difficulty.
  • Cosmetic concerns about dorsal hump, tip shape, deviation or asymmetry.
  • Recurrent epistaxis associated with septal deviation or septal perforation.

How we investigate

Detailed ENT and facial-aesthetic examination, fibreoptic nasendoscopy, photographic documentation, structured consent process with realistic outcome discussion. CT sinuses where chronic sinusitis is contributing.

Treatment options at The Vesey

  • Septoplasty — for pure functional nasal obstruction.
  • Rhinoplasty — open or closed approach, for aesthetic or reconstructive indication.
  • Combined septorhinoplasty — single operation, single recovery period.
  • Turbinate reduction — added where inferior turbinate hypertrophy is contributing.
  • Revision rhinoplasty — by an experienced revision-rhinoplasty surgeon where a previous operation has not met expectations.
How long is recovery after septorhinoplasty? +

Most patients take 1–2 weeks off work. Swelling and bruising peak at days 2–3 and largely resolve within 3 weeks. Internal splints are usually removed at 1 week. Final nasal shape settles over 12–18 months as residual swelling subsides.

Is septorhinoplasty performed under general anaesthetic? +

Yes. Septorhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic as a day-case or overnight-stay procedure. Local anaesthetic alone is only suitable for minor septal procedures.

Can septorhinoplasty be done on the NHS? +

Septoplasty for significant breathing impairment may qualify on the NHS, but waiting times are long. Rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons is not funded. Private treatment at The Vesey gives same-week consultation and a planned surgical date within weeks.

What is a deviated septum? +

The nasal septum is the wall dividing the two nostrils. A deviated septum — where it leans to one side — is extremely common, often from birth or following trauma. It can cause one-sided nasal blockage, snoring and recurrent sinusitis. Septoplasty straightens it to restore the airway.
