What it is
We test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C, trichomonas and Mycoplasma genitalium via PCR / serology. Samples are urine or self-collected swab where possible (with examination only when clinically indicated). All testing is confidential and not shared with your GP without consent.
When this is relevant
- New sexual partner or unprotected encounter and want a baseline check.
- Discharge, pain on urination, lower abdominal pain or genital lesion.
- Asymptomatic but worried after a partner has been diagnosed.
- Pre-conception STI screen.
- Annual screen for higher-risk patients (HIV negative MSM, multiple recent partners, sex worker).
How we investigate
PCR (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium, trichomonas) from first-pass urine or self-swab. Serology (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B core + surface antigen, hepatitis C antibody) by venepuncture. Window periods explained at consultation.

When can I be tested after a potential exposure? +
Window periods vary by infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: reliable from 2 weeks after exposure. HIV (4th generation antigen/antibody test): reliable from 28 days; conclusive at 45 days. Syphilis: reliable from 6 weeks. Hepatitis B/C: reliable from 8–12 weeks. We advise on timing at booking so your results are conclusive.
Will my results be shared with my GP? +
No — not without your explicit consent. All STI testing and results are confidential. We will not write to your GP unless you specifically request it. If we administer treatment, we may suggest you inform your GP for continuity of care, but this is your choice.
Can men be tested at The Vesey? +
Yes. STI testing at The Vesey is available to adults of all sexes. Men can provide a first-pass urine sample for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium and trichomonas; blood is taken for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis serology. Urethral swabs and anal/throat swabs are taken where indicated.
How quickly will I get my results? +
PCR results (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium, trichomonas) are typically available within 2–5 working days. HIV and serology results come back within 3–5 working days. Positive results are communicated promptly with direct contact from the clinical team, not just an online portal message.
