Vibrant sound bridge middle ear implant

What is a vibrant sound bridge middle ear implant? The Vibrant Soundbridge is a middle ear implant system designed to improve hearing for individuals with moderate to severe sensorineural or conductive hearing loss. Unlike traditional hearing aids, this implant directly stimulates the middle ear structures, providing improved sound perception and quality. It consists of an external audio process

What it is

A surgically-implanted middle-ear actuator drives the ossicular chain or oval window directly, bypassing the ear canal. Suitable for patients with chronic ear canal problems (otitis externa, eczema), single-sided deafness, or anatomical variants that prevent conventional aid use.

When this is relevant

  • Hearing loss that hearing aids cannot adequately address.
  • Chronic ear canal problems preventing conventional aid use.
  • Anatomical abnormality (atresia, microtia) precluding behind-the-ear aids.
  • Single-sided deafness with established benefit from CROS aid trial.
  • Existing Soundbridge requiring assessment, maintenance or upgrade.

How we investigate

Pure-tone audiogram, speech audiometry, tympanometry, CT temporal bones, hearing-aid trial documentation, MDT discussion at the implanting centre.

Options at The Vesey

  • Candidacy assessment - comprehensive workup before referral.
  • Implant centre referral - coordinated with one of the UK's tertiary auditory implant centres.
  • Hearing aid optimisation first - the Soundbridge is reserved for those for whom conventional aids fail.
  • Audiology follow-up after implantation, in conjunction with the implant centre.
  • Battery and maintenance via the implant centre per manufacturer schedule.
Who is a good candidate for the Vibrant Soundbridge? +

Adults with moderate to severe sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing loss who cannot benefit adequately from conventional hearing aids — typically due to chronic ear canal problems, anatomical abnormalities preventing aid use, or single-sided deafness. A full audiological and ENT assessment determines candidacy.

How is the Vibrant Soundbridge different from a cochlear implant? +

A cochlear implant bypasses the entire hearing organ, converting sound to electrical signals sent directly to the auditory nerve — used for severe to profound loss. The Soundbridge works at the level of the middle ear, amplifying mechanical movement of the ossicles — suitable for moderate to severe loss where some natural hearing remains.

Is the Vibrant Soundbridge MRI-compatible? +

The implanted component is compatible with 1.5T MRI scans under specific conditions with the audio processor removed. Your implanting centre will provide an MRI safety card. Always inform the MRI team about the implant before any scan.

What ongoing care does the Soundbridge require? +

The audio processor (worn externally, held by magnet) needs battery changes and periodic software mapping — typically annually or after significant hearing change. The implanted component is maintenance-free. We provide follow-up audiology in conjunction with the implanting tertiary centre.
