About the procedure

What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty is surgical correction of the eyelids — removing excess skin, muscle, and occasionally fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It may be performed for functional reasons — when drooping upper eyelids (dermatochalasis or ptosis) obstruct the visual field — or for cosmetic reasons, addressing the tired or aged appearance associated with upper eyelid excess or lower eyelid bags.

Functional upper blepharoplasty is sometimes available on the NHS when visual field obstruction is confirmed, but cosmetic blepharoplasty is exclusively private. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia as a day case and takes 45–90 minutes depending on whether one or both upper and lower lids are treated.

The process

What happens at The Vesey

From your first consultation to discharge — here is what to expect at every stage.

Ophthalmology consultant assessment

Visual field testing, assessment of ptosis and dermatochalasis, and discussion of the extent of surgery and expected aesthetic outcome.

Pre-operative assessment

Routine health check. Aspirin and anticoagulants may need to be stopped beforehand.

Blepharoplasty

Local anaesthesia to the eyelids. Incisions are placed within natural eyelid creases. Excess skin, muscle and fat are removed or repositioned. Fine sutures close the incisions.

Recovery

Discharged the same day. Cold compresses and head elevation for first 48 hours.

After your procedure

Recovery — what to expect

Bruising and swelling for 2 weeks. Sutures removed at 5–7 days. Return to work and normal activities at 1–2 weeks. Final results visible at 4–6 weeks.

Your consultant will provide you with a personalised recovery plan at your assessment appointment, based on your individual procedure, health status, and activity requirements.

Your questions answered

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) — frequently asked questions

How much does blepharoplasty cost at The Vesey?
Upper blepharoplasty at The Vesey is from £2,500. Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty depends on the extent of surgery. A consultant assessment costs from £260.
Is blepharoplasty available on the NHS?
Upper blepharoplasty may be available on the NHS when it can be demonstrated that the drooping eyelid significantly obstructs the visual field. Cosmetic blepharoplasty is not available on the NHS.
Will blepharoplasty affect my vision?
Functional blepharoplasty typically improves the visual field by removing excess skin obscuring the upper visual field. The procedure does not change the optical quality of vision.
How long do blepharoplasty results last?
Blepharoplasty produces long-lasting results — typically 10–15 years or more — though the ageing process continues. The procedure does not prevent future age-related changes.
Do I need a referral for blepharoplasty at The Vesey?
No — you can book an ophthalmology consultant directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
