About the procedure

What is tonsillectomy?

Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the palatine tonsils, performed under general anaesthesia. It is most commonly performed for recurrent tonsillitis — when a patient experiences frequent episodes of bacterial tonsil infection that significantly affect quality of life — and for obstructive sleep apnoea, where enlarged tonsils obstruct the airway during sleep.

The procedure takes approximately 30–45 minutes. Modern tonsillectomy techniques including cold steel dissection, coblation, and electrocautery allow the experienced ENT surgeon to minimise bleeding and post-operative pain. NHS waiting lists for tonsillectomy now exceed 18 months in many areas — private treatment at The Vesey provides access within weeks.

Your questions answered

Tonsillectomy — frequently asked questions

Is tonsillectomy suitable for children?
Yes. Tonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations in children. At The Vesey, children are assessed by an experienced paediatric ENT surgeon and a paediatric anaesthetist.
How much does tonsillectomy cost at The Vesey?
Tonsillectomy at The Vesey is from £2,500 for children and from £2,800 for adults. An ENT consultant assessment costs from £260.
How long will my throat hurt after tonsillectomy?
Most patients experience a sore throat for 10–14 days. Days 5–8 are typically the most uncomfortable as the surgical scabs separate. Regular pain relief (paracetamol and ibuprofen alternating) is important throughout recovery.
What are the risks of tonsillectomy?
The main risk is post-operative bleeding, which occurs in approximately 3–5% of cases. Other risks include infection, reaction to anaesthesia and, rarely, damage to adjacent structures. Your surgeon will discuss all risks at your assessment.
Do I need a GP referral for tonsillectomy at The Vesey?
No — you can book an ENT consultant appointment directly. Call 0121 387 3727 or book online.
