Cervical screening, at a time that suits you.
A 30-minute appointment with a doctor at The Vesey, Sutton Coldfield. Your smear sample is tested first for high-risk HPV, and examined for cell changes only if HPV is found. Your results are explained with clear next steps. Offered from age 25.
What's included — four parts, assessed together
The screen combines a physical examination with a sample taken for laboratory testing.
A speculum is gently inserted so the cervix can be seen clearly. The examination usually takes a few minutes.
A small, soft brush is used to take a sample of cells from the surface of the cervix.
The sample is tested first for high-risk HPV. If HPV is found, the same sample is examined under a microscope for cell changes (cytology).
Your results are explained clearly, with a recommended date for your next screen or, where needed, a referral for further assessment.
What happens with your results
The most common result. You are invited again at the routine interval, with nothing further to do in the meantime.
You are invited back sooner, usually within a year, to check whether the virus has cleared on its own.
You are referred for colposcopy, a closer examination of the cervix.
If you're insured or paying privately, onward referral is handled privately. If you'd rather not pay privately for onward care, we can, with your consent, share your results with your GP, who can refer you onward through the NHS colposcopy pathway.
Your comfort and dignity
- A chaperone is always offered, whatever the sex of the doctor
- You are in control — you can ask to stop the examination at any point, without giving a reason
- Privacy to undress, with only the area being examined exposed
- Adjustments on request — if a previous examination was difficult, tell us beforehand; we can offer a smaller speculum or pause part-way through
Who the screen is for
Cervical screening is offered from age 25. Routine screening runs from 25 to 64, every 5 years for those who test HPV negative, in line with current NHS guidance; your doctor may recommend more frequent screening if you are HPV positive, immunosuppressed or living with HIV. We don't offer screening under 25: cervical cancer is very rare at that age and most cell changes resolve on their own. If you are under 25 and have symptoms, please see your GP.
